Kuwaiti funds sought for IPTN program<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto yesterday urged Kuwait to
\nexamine the possibility of financing the development of airplanes
\nbuilt by IPTN, the state-owned aircraft manufacturer.<\/p>\n
Soeharto made his appeal during a one and a half hour meeting
\nwith Kuwaiti Prime Minister Shaikh Saad Al Abdullah Al Salem Al
\nSabah yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"President Soeharto expressed his view that apart from
\ninvesting directly in Indonesia, they should also explore the
\npossibility of helping finance a number of Indonesian products,
\npossibly IPTN planes,\" Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono told
\nreporters after the meeting.<\/p>\n
Al Sabah is scheduled to visit the IPTN plant in Bandung, West
\nJava, this morning.<\/p>\n
The Kuwaiti crown prince arrived from Bangladesh yesterday for
\nthe last leg of his four-nation tour of Asia which included
\nThailand and China.<\/p>\n
His five-day visit comes in the wake of a United Nations
\nresolution allowing Iraq to partially sell its oil. The
\nresolution was quickly rejected by Baghdad who sought a complete
\nlifting of the sanctions.<\/p>\n
When asked by journalists whether these latest developments
\nwere brought up during the meeting, Moerdiono replied: \"Of course
\nthe issue was discussed by the two leaders.\"<\/p>\n
He declined to give further details, however, saying that \"at
\nthe present time I do not feel that I am in a position to
\nelaborate further on the issue.\"<\/p>\n
Despite vocally supporting the easing of sanctions against
\nIraq, Indonesia voted in favor of the new resolution proposed by
\nthe UN Security Council in New York on Friday. The resolution
\nlimits Iraq to selling $2 billion worth of oil over the next six-
\nmonths.<\/p>\n
In the past few months, both Iraq and Kuwait have been
\nlobbying for Indonesia's support at the Security Council by
\nsending high level delegates to Jakarta.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Soeharto yesterday explained the
\ndifficulties Indonesia was encountering in its development.<\/p>\n
\"More specifically, the President elaborated on the obstacles
\nwe are facing in the field of infrastructure, specifically the
\ndevelopment of transportation, electricity and
\ntelecommunications,\" Moerdiono said.<\/p>\n
Moerdiono said Al Sabah responded by confirming his country's
\nwillingness to invest here.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said that by investing in Indonesia, Kuwait would
\nalso have a doorway to the Asia Pacific market of two billion
\npeople.<\/p>\n
Included in Al Sabah's entourage are Minister of Oil Abdul
\nMohssen Med'eij Al Med'eij and Minister of Trade and Industry
\nHilal Mishari Al Mutairi.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Wiranto,
\nthe Kuwaiti prime minister yesterday afternoon laid a wreath at
\nthe Kalibata heroes cemetery.<\/p>\n
During the evening Soeharto hosted a dinner reception for Al
\nSabah at the State Palace.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Soeharto touched on the efforts of the Non-
\nAligned Movement (NAM) to shape a new world order and urged both
\nnations, as NAM members, to help each other reach that goal.<\/p>\n
Indonesia currently chairs the 111-nation NAM and will host a
\nministerial meeting of the movement in Bandung next week.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Al Sabah will fly to Bali where he will spend the
\nday before heading back to Kuwait. (mds)<\/p>",
