Jakarta (ANTARA) - Kuwait\u2019s Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor Leste, and\nASEAN, Khalid Jassim Al-Yassin, has affirmed his country\u2019s commitment to\npromoting a peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels amid the\nconflict between the United States (US), Israel, and Iran that has been\nongoing since February.<\/p>\n
During a visit to the ANTARA Heritage Center in Pasar Baru, Jakarta,\non Tuesday, Khalid stated that the Kuwaiti government had informed Iran\nfrom the outset that it would not take sides in the conflict. \u201cWe remain\nneutral. We do not allow our territory or airspace to be used for\nattacks against neighbouring countries (including Iran),\u201d Khalid Jassim\nAl-Yassin said.<\/p>\n
Despite maintaining a neutral stance, Khalid revealed that Iran had\nlaunched several attacks on Kuwaiti territory, including targeting\ncivilian facilities such as seawater desalination plants, power\nstations, oil refineries, and airports. According to him, these attacks\nhave had a widespread impact on the daily activities of Kuwait\u2019s\ncitizens. \u201cFor a small country like Kuwait, which is only 17,000 square\nkilometres, these attacks cause disruption to daily life in Kuwait,\u201d\nKhalid said.<\/p>\n
As part of efforts to maintain regional stability, Kuwait continues\nto urge all parties involved to prioritise dialogue over violence as a\nmeans of resolving the conflict. Furthermore, Kuwait is calling on all\nparties to comply with international law, international human rights\nlaw, and the United Nations (UN) Charter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Kuwaiti government welcomes the ceasefire agreement between the\nUS and Iran, and we continue to encourage Pakistan and Qatar (as\nmediators) to continue their mediation efforts to achieve a peaceful\nresolution to this conflict,\u201d Khalid stated. He also stressed the\nimportance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz\nas an international waterway. According to Khalid, the Strait of Hormuz\nis of strategic importance to Kuwait as it is the sole maritime\ntransport route in the Gulf region.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to ensure that the strait remains safe and open for shipping\nactivities. That (Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz) is contrary\nto international maritime law,\u201d he said.
