Kutai locals demand own regency<\/p>\n
SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Leaders of community members
\nliving in coastal areas in Kutai Kartanegara district threatened
\non Wednesday to mobilize people to occupy vital oil and gas
\ncompanies in their four subdistricts if their demand for a
\nseparate regency was rejected by the local authorities.<\/p>\n
The people in the four subdistricts of Sangasanga, Samboja,
\nAngggana and Muara Jawa have long urged the Kutai Kartanegara
\nadministration to approve their demand for the establishment of a
\nPantai (beach) regency.<\/p>\n
The Kutai Kartanegara legislative body has opposed their wish
\nto break away from their current regency and establish a new one.<\/p>\n
Juraidin, leader of the Pantai People's Council (DRP), told
\njournalists in the East Kalimantan capital of Samarinda that the
\norganization would fight on to push the demand through the
\nprovince's legislative body.<\/p>\n
"We hope the East Kalimantan legislature can accept the demand
\nand find the best solution to meet the aspirations of 90 percent
\nof the people in the four subdistricts located in the coastal
\nareas, which are home to about 110 people," he said.<\/p>\n
He said if the debate on the issue became deadlocked, his
\norganization would mobilize people to halt the operations of
\njoint venture oil and gas firms in the region, including Total
\nFinalelf, Vico Indonesia and Unocol, to push their demands.<\/p>\n
The rejection of the demands would be illogical and
