Kurniawan signs Coca-Cola deal<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's new soccer idol Kurniawan Dwi
\nYulianto signed an advertising deal yesterday with leading
\nsoftdrink maker Coca-cola.<\/p>\n
According to the one-year agreement, Kurniawan's picture and
\nbiography will adorn more than 416,600 cans of Coke until June
\n30.<\/p>\n
"Kurniawan may also help us promote our products by starring
\nin our commercials," Johannes Wardhana of Coca-cola said. "The
\ndeal is merely based on the goodwill of both parties."<\/p>\n
Kurniawan, a member of the national Olympic team who plays for
\nthe Swiss premier league side Lucerne, is one of the five
\noutstanding athletes who was selected to represent their sporting
\norganizations in the fundraising program.<\/p>\n
The other athletes are badminton queen Susi Susanti, female
\narcher Nurfitriyana, boxer Albert Papilaya and sprinter Mardi
\nLestari. Basketball was also picked, though no cagers will grace
\nany canned drinks. The sport will be represented by a motto
\nsaying: "Basketball is our game."<\/p>\n
Proceeds will go to the All-Indonesia Football Association
\n(PSSI). Kurniawan's share will be decided later by the national
\nsoccer governing body.<\/p>\n
PSSI Secretary-General Soeparjo Pontjowinoto said Kurniawan
\nwas selected by a board of coaches. "We prefer a young and
\nskillful player to an experienced one for the sake of our long-
\nterm talent scouting program," he said.<\/p>\n
The commercial deal signed yesterday followed the previous
\nagreement made by the company and the Ministry of Youth Affairs
\nand Sports on March 28.<\/p>\n
Coca-Cola will contribute Rp 20 from each can sold to the
\nnational sports development body. A total of Rp 250 million
\n(US$113,600) is expected to be raised. (amd)<\/p>",
