Kurniawan faces sanction over alleged drug use<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) will
\nsanction Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto from PSM Makassar soccer club on
\nFriday after he failed to explain his alleged use of shabu-shabu
\n(crystal methamphetamine) last month.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the association's disciplinary commission,
\nAndi Darussalam Tabusalla, said in Surabaya on Sunday he would
\ngive Kurniawan one more opportunity to meet with the commission
\nbefore Friday to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n
\"We will send a letter to Kurniawan on Monday to ask him to
\nmake his appeal before Friday, when we decide on the sanction,\"
\nhe was quoted by Antara news agency as saying. However, he did
\nnot specify what sanction the commission would hand Kurniawan.<\/p>\n
\"I will treat this case fairly, although I have an attachment
\nto PSM. This drug case must be completely resolved if we want to
\nmove ahead with the development of national soccer,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Darussalam made the statement after meeting with Mursyid
\nEffendi from the Persebaya soccer club in the Regent Hotel in
\nMalang on Saturday night. The commission originally invited
\nKurniawan and his teammate Kuncoro to attend the meeting to
\nexplain themselves, but neither player showed.<\/p>\n
Darussalam said he and other members of his team, including
\nPSSI medical commission head Sonny L. Tobing and anti-doping task
\nforce secretary Eddi Elison, were only able to gather information
\non the case from Mursyid, who arrived at the hotel with his
\nmanager Karwoto and Hartono.<\/p>\n
He said Mursyid insisted the shabu-shabu belonged to
\nKurniawan. \"We will accept Mursyid's confession and sanction
\nKurniawan,\" Darussalam said.<\/p>\n
He said he did not know why Kurniawan and Kuncoro failed to
\nappear at the hotel, but he suspected both players' intent was to
\navoid the meeting.<\/p>\n
Darussalam added that he had difficulty contacting PSM manager
\nKadir Halid in Malang, where PSM was scheduled to play local team
\nPersema in their Bank Mandiri national soccer league match on
\nSunday. \"We're very disappointed with his attitude, which appears
\nto despise PSSI.\"<\/p>\n
He accused PSM officials of not taking the drug case
\nseriously, even though it involved their players, adding that he
\nwould ask PSSI chairman Agum Gumelar to take stern measure
\nagainst PSM.<\/p>\n
Kuncoro admitted earlier this month that he took shabu-shabu
\nin the room he was sharing with Kurniawan at the Weta Hotel in
\nSurabaya prior to their match against Petrokimia Gresik on April
\n11.<\/p>\n
Kuncoro said he was persuaded by Mursyid to take the drugs,
\nbut Mursyid said it was Kurniawan who encouraged him to use the
\nshabu-shabu. Kurniawan has refuted Mursyid's statement. (ivy)<\/p>",
