Kurniawan and Putu Gede get berths in national team<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Following their excellent performances in the
\njust-concluded Bank Mandiri national soccer league, the Soccer
\nAssociation of Indonesia (PSSI) invited Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto of
\nPSM Makassar and I Putu Gede of Arema Malang to join the national
\nteam.<\/p>\n
National team director Muhammad Zein also said on Monday Elli
\nAiboy had been dismissed from the national team.<\/p>\n
"We have 26 players on the team who will start training this
\nweek. This number will be reduced to 20 after their performance
\nat the Piala Kemerdekaan (Independence Cup) on Aug. 25."<\/p>\n
Currently on the national team are goalkeepers Hendro Kartiko,
\nI Komang Putra and Sahari Gultom; strikers Gendut Doni,
\nKurniawan, Rocky Puttiray, Bambang Pamungkas and Marthen Tao;
\nmidfielders Bima Sakti, Uston Nawawi, Francis Wewengkang, Imran
\nNahumarury, Yaris Riadi, Seto Nurdianto, Putu Gede and Aji
\nSantoso; defenders Sugiantoro, Eko Purjianto, Slamet Ryadi,
\nWarsidi, Nuralim, Jet Donald Laala and Dulla Baa; and wingbacks
\nIsmet Sofyan, Anang Ma'aruf, Ortisan Salosa and Aji Santoso.<\/p>\n
Zein also said PSSI would conduct random drug tests of
\nnational team members. "If a player fails a drug test, he will
\ndismissed from the squad whoever he is. We will immediately send
\nhim to a rehabilitation center."<\/p>\n
The national team is preparing for the 2000 Asian Cup in
\nLebanon in October and the Tiger Cup in Thailand in November.<\/p>\n
Separately, PSSI official in charge of discipline, Andi
\nDarussalam Tabusala, said the association could not sanction
\nclubs which took part in last week's league semifinals and final
\nand failed to prevent their supporters from rushing onto the
\nfield.<\/p>\n
"We will recommend PSSI chairman Agum Gumelar revise the old
\nregulations, which do not stipulate the guidelines for the
\nsemifinal and final matches," he said.<\/p>\n
Darussalam also said PSSI could not punish the matches'
\norganizing committee, chaired by PSSI treasurer Irawadi, for
\nSunday's incident when PSM supporters rushed onto the field to
\ncelebrate their team's 3-2 victory over Pupuk Kaltim Bontang of
\nEast Kalimantan in the final.<\/p>\n
"The disciplinary commission is a small part of PSSI. We can
\nnot act like the attorney general, who can question anybody
\nregardless of their position," he said.<\/p>\n
Police officers were outnumbered and seemingly late in
\nreacting to the rush of the crowd onto the field, which allowed
\nfans to set off firecrackers and burn the tribune. (ivy)<\/p>",
