        "content": "<p>Kumaratunga fires top official<\/p>\n<p>SRI LANKA: Embattled president sacked a top official of her <br>\nparty on Monday in a bid to quell dissent in the minority <br>\ngovernment ahead of a no-confidence vote in parliament.<\/p>\n<p>State radio in Colombo said S.B. Dissanayake, general <br>\nsecretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the main constituent of <br>\nthe ruling Peoples' Alliance coalition, had been removed from his <br>\npost.<\/p>\n<p>Dissanayake was one of three ministers who resigned from the <br>\ncabinet this month citing differences with the government's new <br>\nMarxist allies, the former rebel Peoples' Liberation Front (JVP).<\/p>\n<p>President Chandrika Kumaratunga had traded allegations of <br>\nmisrule and corruption with Dissanayake, formerly a close <br>\nconfidant and second only to her in the party hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p>Their feud was brought into the open by Dissanayake's <br>\nopposition to Kumaratunga's suspension of parliament on July 11 <br>\nahead of an earlier no-confidence vote. --Reuters<\/p>",
