Kudos to Rector of Sebelas Maret Univ.<\/p>\n
As a participant of the conference, allow me to thank the
\nRector of Sebelas Maret university and the Conference Organizing
\nCommittee for organizing the first International Conference On
\nTranslation, Discourse and Culture at Novotel Hotel in Surakarta,
\nCentral Java, on Sept. 14 and Sept. 15.<\/p>\n
The evening program organized for Conference Participants
\nreflected the spirit of appreciating arts and artistic
\nexpression. I was most impressed by the students' sincere and
\nheartfelt English poetry reading performance. I wish that, like
\nthem, more students could appreciate true art, which is not
\nnecessarily \"noisy\" or \"fancy\" -- it simply conveys human
\nemotions using the artistic means available.<\/p>\n
At the end of a long day of Conference presentations, all
\nparticipants of the program appreciated the performance of one of
\nthe paper presenters, who entertained them with a traditional
\nkeroncong style song translated into English! -- Another great
\nexample of how a good translation can open up so many windows for
\nspeakers of different languages, coming from different cultural
\nbackgrounds, allowing them a glimpse into other cultures.<\/p>\n
It is really sad to think how so many such windows would
\nremain closed forever if there were no dedicated translators to
\nhelp open them up to the world.<\/p>\n
Hopefully, it can help translators from Indonesia, and from
\nother countries as well, to appreciate their profession more, and
\nfor other people to recognize it as a truly challenging and
\nimportant calling in life.<\/p>\n
