Kubu tribe shuns modernity<\/p>\n
JAMBI: The people of the Kubu tribe, who have followed a
\nhunter-gatherer lifestyle in remote forest areas of the province
\nfor centuries, said they would not adapt to modern ways unless
\nthey were promised certain items.<\/p>\n
Erdy Taufik, the spokesman for the Foundation of Kubu Tribe
\nEmpowerment, said that the Kubu people would be ready to resettle
\nin certain locations that were prepared for them only if they
\nwere given their daily requirements of rice, cigarettes, matches
\nand salt.<\/p>\n
\"A number of Kubu people who were resettled during the New
\nOrder era have returned to the original group in the province,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He said the tribe made contact with outsiders only when they
\nwent to local markets to sell rattan and other forest resources
