        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2013 National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) chief Lieutenant\nGeneral Kristomei Sianturi said he was open to replacing officials at\nthe agency if necessary, especially where officials need to be replaced\nbecause of legal proceedings. He made the remarks after being formally\nappointed by President Prabowo Subianto as BNPB chief.<\/p>\n<p>Kristomei said he would conduct an internal consolidation to assess\nthe agency\u2019s condition and evaluate its organisational needs. This comes\nas the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) pursues a hand-capture\noperation case within BNPB.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the possibility of replacing officials implicated in\nlegal proceedings, Kristomei did not rule it out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see. If it is necessary because there are legal proceedings,\nthen we should replace them,\u201d Kristomei said after his appointment on\nThursday, 15 October 2026.<\/p>\n<p>He did not name any specific officials who might be replaced. He said\nthe agency would first conduct an internal review and monitor\ndevelopments in the ongoing legal process.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"kristomei-to-review-bnpb-internally\">Kristomei to Review BNPB\nInternally<\/h3>\n<p>Kristomei said internal consolidation would be one of his first steps\nafter formally taking charge of BNPB. He wants to understand the\norganisation\u2019s condition before deciding on further measures to carry\nout its disaster-management responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>The review is important as BNPB faces a range of challenges, from\nforest and land fires and floods to volcanic eruptions.<\/p>\n<p>Kristomei stressed that disaster response requires collaboration, a\nrapid response, integration and coordination between agencies.<\/p>\n<p>BNPB cannot manage disasters affecting communities on its own, he\nsaid. Coordination is needed with ministries, agencies, the Indonesian\nNational Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police, local governments and\nthe public.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the internal consolidation would take place alongside\nefforts to accelerate disaster response in various regions.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"kpk-case-left-to-law-enforcement\">KPK Case Left to Law\nEnforcement<\/h3>\n<p>Regarding the KPK\u2019s hand-capture operation case at BNPB, Kristomei\nsaid the legal process was entirely the responsibility of law\nenforcement authorities. He assured that BNPB would not interfere in the\nhandling of the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs for the recent KPK operation, we are leaving the legal process\nentirely to law enforcement.
