Ahead of the expected announcement by the central KPU, the
\nregional KPU offices have already announced the final list of
\nlegislative candidates that failed the final screening to compete
\nin the upcoming election.<\/p>\n
In the North Sumatra capital of Medan, the North Sumatra
\nGeneral Elections Commission (KPUD) has decided to bar 101 of
\n1,347 total legislative candidates from contesting the elections,
\nas they had failed to fulfill the requirements set by the KPU.<\/p>\n
Irham Buana Nasution, chairman of the North Sumatra KPU, said
\non Monday that the candidates had already been removed from the
\nlist of legislative candidates eligible to contest the elections.<\/p>\n
\"Their names will be submitted to their political parties on
\nTuesday,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Irham said the candidates were omitted for a variety of
\nreasons, including failure to submit their academic diplomas,
\nfailure to resign from the civil service, not possessing an
\nofficial party membership card or because they had withdrawn.<\/p>\n
He said the decision to drop them from the elections was made
\non Sunday, when the KPU held a plenary meeting in Medan to
\ndiscuss the verification results for legislative candidates.<\/p>\n
The 101 candidates represent 22 political parties.<\/p>\n
The North Sumatra KPU's announcement of verification results
\nis ahead of the central KPU. The central KPU is scheduled to
\ncomplete the verification process on Tuesday, and will announce
\nthe final candidates on Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n
Separately, chairman of the North Sumatra Election Supervisory
\nCommittee (Panwaslu) Choking Susilo Sakeh said they had received
\nreports from the public that some 50 candidates had forged their
\nacademic diplomas, including those candidates who had already
\npassed the KPU verification process.<\/p>\n
Choking said Panwaslu would immediately notify the KPU of
\nthose candidates suspected of submitting forged diplomas.<\/p>\n
Panwaslu has called upon the KPU to investigate the reports,
\nand if proven true, to drop the candidates. He also said Panwaslu
\nwould report the candidates to the police for further
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n
But, Irham said the list of legislative candidates was final,
\nand the KPU would not change it. He said that it is the
\nresponsibility of the police force to investigate whether the
\nreport was true, and not the KPU.<\/p>\n
\"These cases have entered the legal realm,\" he said, adding
\nthat forging school diplomas was a crime.<\/p>\n
Separately, 95 out of total 1,226 legislative candidates in
\nthe South Sulawesi capital of Makassar have been declared
\nineligible for various reasons, including the failure to complete
\nthe administrative requirements of the KPU.<\/p>\n
Muhammad Darwis, a member of South Sulawesi KPU, said that the
\ndecision to bar the candidates from joining the election was
\ndecided on Monday in KPU's plenary meeting.<\/p>\n
