        "content": "<p>KPU under fire for dealine shift<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The General Elections Commission (KPU) came<br>\nunder attack on Tuesday for moving back the deadline for<br>\npolitical parties to arrange vote-sharing deals (stembus akoord).<\/p>\n<p>The Election Supervisory Committee said that by changing the<br>\ndeadline from May 31 to June 4 the KPU fell short of its<br>\ncommitment to make the upcoming elections just and fair.<\/p>\n<p>The commission moved the deadline to June 4, the last day of<br>\nelection campaigning, on the grounds that political parties had<br>\nnot finished their talks on the sharing of votes.<\/p>\n<p>The 1999 electoral law stipulates that any vote-sharing<br>\narrangements among political parties should be made public one<br>\nweek ahead of the election day.<\/p>\n<p>\"KPU should have consistently abided by the law,\" the election<br>\ncommission secretary, Satya Arinanto, said.<\/p>\n<p>Eight Muslim parties have closed a deal to apportion extra<br>\nvotes among themselves. They are the Justice Party (PK), the<br>\nCrescent Star Party (PBB), the United Development Party (PPP),<br>\nthe Muslim Community Awakening Party (PKU), the Nahdlatul Ummat<br>\nParty (PNU), the Islamic Community Party (PUI), the Indonesian<br>\nMasyumi Islamic Political Party (PPIM) and the Indonesian<br>\nSyarikat Islam Party-1905 (PSII-1905).<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan),<br>\nNational Mandate Party (PAN) and the National Awakening Party<br>\n(PKB) are also considering a similar agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Tamat Anshori of the East Java PBB chapter denied reports on<br>\nTuesday that the eight Islamic parties capped the deal in a bid<br>\nto block PDI Perjuangan chief Megawati Soekarnoputri's push for<br>\npresidency.<\/p>\n<p>Anshori said the accord was meant to boost the party<br>\nalliance's election performance.
