KPU to form poll supervisory team<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The General Elections Commission (KPU) will conclude
\non Saturday the screening to elect six people to form the
\nelection supervisory committee and its result is to be announced
\nto the public on Monday.<\/p>\n
The screening began on Thursday when all nine members of the
\nKPU held an interview with the nominees.<\/p>\n
Candidates were given five minutes to introduce themselves and
\ntheir background and explain their motivation in joining the
\nsupervisory committee.<\/p>\n
Each KPU member then asked the nominees various questions in a
\n40-minute session that followed. Among the questions asked were
\nabout the mechanism of the general election and the supervisory
\ncommittee's main tasks.<\/p>\n
Several candidates were also asked about any possible links
\nwith political parties to determine their neutrality.<\/p>\n
The supervisory committee is an independent body that will
\nmonitor the 2004 general election, including ballot counting.<\/p>\n
Of the six nominees, one was from the media, two from the
\nacademic community, and three from the general public. Three more
\nmembers of the election supervisory committee will be appointed
\nfrom the Attorney General's Office and the National Police. -- JP<\/p>",
