KPU, police discuss election security<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A delegation from the General Elections Commission
\n(KPU) met National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar on Wednesday
\nto discuss security arrangements for the 2004 elections.<\/p>\n
KPU deputy chairman Ramlan Surbakti told reporters after the
\nmeeting at National Police Headquarters that the talks were
\nfocused on plans to secure and monitor the elections across the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
\"The police will deploy its officers up to the district level
\nto prevent possible crimes during the election,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will hold the first direct elections to decide the
\nnew legislative members and a president. The general election
\nwill take place on April 5, 2004, followed by a two-phased
\npresidential election between June and August of that year.<\/p>\n
Analysts have predicted that the new system would create more
\nsecurity threats before, during and after the elections.<\/p>\n
KPU was represented by chairman Nazarudin Syamsuddin, Ramlan
\nand commission members Chusnul Mar'iyah and Anas Urbaningrum
