        "content": "<p>KPPU seeking tenure extension<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Although the tenure of current members of the Commission for the<br>\nSupervision of Business Competition (KPPU) expires next week, it<br>\nappears that they will hold onto their posts until September,<br>\npending the selection and appointment of their replacements.<\/p>\n<p>KPPU chairman Sutrisno Iwantono said the tenure for current<br>\nmembers would expire on June 6, but to ensure the continuation of<br>\ncommission activities they expected that a regulation would be<br>\nenacted extending their tenure in view of the anticipated lengthy<br>\nprocess for selecting replacement members.<\/p>\n<p>\"Tenure extension is important to ensure the continuation of<br>\neight ongoing cases,\" Iwantono told a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Iwantono said a selection committee -- comprising senior state<br>\nofficials and independent figures, including academics -- opened<br>\nregistration for candidates on May 19, and would close on June 8.<\/p>\n<p>\"So far there have been 20 names submitted to the committee,\"<br>\nhe said, adding that the selection process would probably be<br>\ncompleted sometime in September.<\/p>\n<p>The selection and appointment process would also require<br>\napproval from the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The KPPU acknowledge that they had started late with the<br>\nprocess, but claimed that they were only partly to blame.<\/p>\n<p>Among other matters, KPPU had to wait for funding allocations<br>\nas set out under this year's state budget, and for the government<br>\nto appoint a new line-up of senior officials from certain<br>\nMinistries as members of the selection committee.<\/p>\n<p>Among members of the selection committee are the Ministry of<br>\nTrade's secretary general Hatanto Reksodipoetro and Ministry of<br>\nJustice and Human Rights director general for public law<br>\nadministration Zulkarnaen Yunus.<\/p>\n<p>Since the commission was formed in March 1999, it has handled<br>\n41 cases of reported unfair business practices. Of the received<br>\ncases, the KPPU has handed down verdicts on 23 cases and settled<br>\n10 cases, while eight were still pending.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 23 verdicts, eight were in the process of being<br>\nappealed to the Supreme Court, the KPPU said.<\/p>",
