KPN offers its experience to Indonesia<\/p>\n

GRONINGEN, Netherlands (JP): With its wide experience as one
\nof the leading telecommunications and postal service operators in
\nthe world, Koninklijke PTT Nederland\/Royal PTT Nederland (KPN)
\noffers assistance to Indonesia in training its human resources.<\/p>\n
Top executives of the company told Indonesian reporters
\nvisiting its headquarters here recently that the firm is
\ninterested in providing assistance for Indonesia both in
\ntelecommunications and postal services.<\/p>\n
Ph. van Tijn, KPN's director of corporate communications, said
\nthat his company offers a combination of postal and
\ntelecommunications services. \"The combination makes KPN unique,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Postal and telecommunications services are provided by KPN's
\nmajor subsidiaries, PTT Post and PTT Telecom.<\/p>\n
PTT Telecom's manager for international training, Toine van
\nBijsterveldt, said that his company and PT Telkom, Indonesia's
\nstate-owned domestic telecommunications operator, have inked an
\naccord to conduct joint training services within a six-year
\nperiod.<\/p>\n
He said that the training will be held both in Bandung, West
\nJava, the site of Telkom's headquarters, and in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
\"We want to assist Telkom to make its training center one of
\nits profit sources,\" said van Bijsterveldt.<\/p>\n
According to van Bijsterveldt, PTT Telecom's training center
\nhere has now become a profit center, as its revenues are expected
\nto increase significantly from 600,000 guilders (US$375,000) in
\n1992 to 6 million guilders this year.<\/p>\n
PTT Telecom and Telkom started their relationship in 1993 when
\nthey signed a strategic cooperation agreement.<\/p>\n
Interest<\/p>\n
PTT Telecom has expressed serious interest in participating in
\nthe development of Indonesia's telecoms industry. PTT Telecom
\nowns a 30 percent stake in PT Bakrie Electronics Company, a
\nBakrie Group subsidiary which installs and operates radio
\ntelephone lines.<\/p>\n
The company is also participating in a tender to buy a portion
\nof the shares of PT Telkomsel, a global system for mobile
\ncommunications cellular phone operator in Indonesia. In addition
\nto the projects, PTT has also provided aid for a school
\ndevelopment in South Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
PTT Telecom has established several joint ventures and
\nsubsidiaries. The company, for instance, participates in
\nUnisource, an alliance with Telia of Sweden, Swiss PTT and
\nTelefonica of Spain. Unisource currently provides data and other
\nvalue-added services for business customers in Western Europe.<\/p>\n
Late last year, Unisource and AT&T of the United States
\nestablished a join venture company, called Uniworld, to provide a
\nfull range of global data and voice service for customers in
\nEurope.<\/p>\n
Unisource also acquired in 1994 a 20 percent stake in
\nWorldPartners, a telecommunications company which is also owned
\nby AT&T, KDD of Japan and Singapore Telecom.<\/p>\n
Together with PTT Post, PTT Telecom has established KPN
\nMultimedia to provide high-tech services using infrastructure
\noperated by the two owning companies.<\/p>\n
According to Van Tijn, KPN is also offering cooperation to
\nIndonesia's state-owned postal company, PT Pos Indonesia.<\/p>\n
PTT Post handles a total of 21 million letters a day,
\nincluding 19 million business letters.<\/p>",
