KPKPN begins collecting data on legislators' wealth<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Audit Commission on Officials' Assets
\n(KPKPN) distributed forms on Tuesday for the House of
\nRepresentatives (DPR) legislators to collect data on their wealth
\nas state officials.<\/p>\n
Speaking in a media conference after handing over the forms to
\nthe House Speaker Akbar Tandjung, KPKPN Chairman Yusuf Syakir
\nsaid the forms should be returned to the commission within one
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
\"The data obtained will be put into the state gazette and the
\npublic may find out about the wealth of the legislators and send
\nus notification if some legislators complete the forms with false
\ndata,\" Yusuf told journalists.<\/p>\n
He underlined that according to Law No. 28\/1999 on clean
\ngovernment, all state officials should declare their wealth,
\notherwise administrative sanctions could be taken against them.<\/p>\n
\"In the form, the legislators have to state their bank
\naccounts, along with those of their spouse and children. If they
\nhave more than one wife, they have to state that, too. Otherwise,
\nthey will be considered as lying,\" Yusuf said.<\/p>\n
He, however, admitted that for the legislators the commission
\nhad limitations as no one could fire a legislator, while the
\nmaximum administrative sanction is dismissal.<\/p>\n
\"To overcome our limited authority, we provide them with
\nanother sealed form in which they agree that if they lie about
\ntheir wealth, they would be willing to be dismissed from their
\nposition as a legislator,\" he said.<\/p>\n
KPKPN's main duties are to audit the state officials' wealth.
\nIf it finds irregularities during an audit, the case will be
\nhanded over to the National Police and the Attorney General's
\nOffice, which will be responsible for further investigation.<\/p>\n
The commission was established last year, after the House
\nnamed 45 members of the commission on July 6. The commission is
\nrequired to audit around 500,000 officials, including the
\npresident and the legislators.<\/p>\n
\"We have the right to hold an empirical audit to follow up
\nwith the notification from the public, so we can double-check the
\nactual data with that stated in the forms filled in by the
\nlegislators,\" Yusuf said.<\/p>\n
\"So, I urge the public to read the state gazette and notify us
\nif they know more information about the state officials' wealth,\"
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
Yusuf also said that President Abdurrahman Wahid should return
\nhis wealth declaration form on March 21, or one month after it
\nwas provided for him.<\/p>\n
\"Then, we will publish the data in the state gazette so the
\npublic can read it,\" he said. (dja)<\/p>",
