KPK to summon judges over bribery case<\/p>\n

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will summon two
\njudges at the Jakarta High Court as witnesses in a high profile
\nbribery case allegedly committed by a lawyer of suspended Aceh
\ngovernor Abdullah Puteh.<\/p>\n
KPK deputy Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean said on Wednesday that
\nthe two judges would be questioned by KPK investigators within
\nthe next two days.<\/p>\n
Tumpak, who visited Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh,
\nhowever, refused to disclose the names of the judges, detik.com
\nreported.<\/p>\n
The two judges will be questioned in connection with the
\nbribery case involving Tengku Syaifuddin Popon who was caught
\nred-handed last month by the KPK paying Rp 250 million
\n(US$25,773) as a bribe to court clerk Ramadhan Rizal. The case
\nhighlights the rampant corruption in the country's weak court
\nsystem.<\/p>\n
The bribery was apparently intended to influence an appeal
\nfiled by Popon's client, Abdullah Puteh, who was sentenced to 10
\nyears imprisonment by the Anticorruption Court that found him
\nguilty of embezzling state money.<\/p>\n
The decision to question the two witnesses, Tumpak added, was
\nbased on information and testimony that had been previously
\nprovided by two other people related to the case, Syamsul himself
\nand another clerk M. Sholeh.<\/p>\n
\"We just need some cross checking with other witnesses,\"
\nTumpak said.<\/p>\n
The two clerks are currently being detained at the Jakarta
\nPolice Headquarters.<\/p>\n
Previously, the KPK also claimed that it had evidence of
\ninvolvement of Paulus Effendi Lotulung, head of the Supreme
\nCourt's administrative division, as well as a former staffer at
\nthe Supreme Court's research division Arifin.<\/p>\n
The KPK has questioned several people believed to have a part
\nin the bribe, including Abdullah's wife Linda Purnomo and a
\nSumatra Utara High Court clerk Said Salim.<\/p>",
