KPK to hire new members<\/p>\n

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will hire some 156
\npeople this year to speed up the investigation of a growing
\nbacklog of corruption cases.<\/p>\n
\"More than 6,000 graft cases have been reported to the KPK and
\nwe cannot handle the increasing workload because we do not have
\nthe personnel,\" KPK chairman Taufiqurrahman Ruki was quoted by
\nAntara as saying on Friday.<\/p>\n
He feared the KPK's credibility would be harmed if it was
\nunable quickly to resolve the corruption cases.<\/p>\n
Taufiqurrahman said the KPK would hire a total of 500 new
\npersonnel, but this year would only hire 156, including
\ninvestigators. The KPK currently has 150 personnel, including 50
\ninvestigators and prosecutors.<\/p>\n
According to earlier reports, KPK officials receive a basic
\nsalary of between Rp 700,000 (US$72) and Rp 42 million a month,
\nmuch higher than the salaries of civil servants. They also
\nreceive housing, health and transportation allowances.<\/p>\n
Anyone interested in joining the KPK must submit a completed
\napplication and a curriculum vitae to Jakarta-based human
\nresources consultancy firm LPPM, or via e-mail at
\nrekrutmen@lppm.ac.id by July 31 at the latest.<\/p>\n
Taufiqurrahman said the use of an independent consultancy
\nfirm would help avoid collusion, nepotism and corruption in the
\nhiring process.<\/p>\n
He said personnel from the police and prosecutors' offices
\ncould apply to the KPK with the approval of their superiors.<\/p>\n
The KPK will provide a training program for all new hires.<\/p>\n
The commission was set up in 2002 at a time when the police
\nand the Attorney General's Office were coming under fire for
\ntheir failure to deal with corruption.<\/p>\n
According to Law No. 30\/2002 on the KPK, the commission has
\nthe authority to investigate and prosecute corruption cases
\ninvolving members of legal institutions, state officials and
\nanyone involved in corruption through legal institution members
\nor state officials. The commission also can investigate graft
\ncases that attract public attention or that cause state losses of
\nat least Rp 1 billion.<\/p>\n
In conducting its investigations and prosecutions, the KPK has
\nthe authority to tap phones; order travel bans; obtain
\ninformation from banks and other financial institutions about the
\nfinances of suspects or defendants; order banks and other
\nfinancial institutions to freeze the accounts of suspects,
\ndefendants or other relevant parties allegedly containing funds
\nderived from corruption; suspend financial transactions, trade
\ntransactions or other agreements; suspend permits and concessions
\nowned by suspects or defendants due to preliminary evidence of
\ncorruption; and instruct the police and other relevant
\ninstitutions to arrest, detain, raid and seize evidence in
\ncorruption cases.<\/p>\n
The most high-profile graft case involving the KPK was that of
\nsuspended Aceh governor Abdullah Puteh, who was sentenced to 10
\nyears in jail for corruption in the purchase of a helicopter for
\nthe provincial administration.<\/p>\n
The commission is currently investigating alleged corruption
\nat the General Elections Commission (KPU), which could eventually
\ndrag down top KPU officials.<\/p>",
