Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating the timeline of a resignation statement allegedly used by suspended Tulungagung Regent Gatut Sunu Wibowo to extort local government officials. On Wednesday, the KPK examined nine witnesses, including protocol and welfare staff, to uncover how the undated, stamped letter was created and employed as leverage in a scheme that netted Rp2.7 billion from an intended Rp5 billion target across 16 district agencies. This probe follows a major sting operation in April 2026 that led to the arrest of Gatut, his brother, and 16 others, highlighting ongoing corruption challenges in regional governance.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is
delving into the chronology of the creation of a resignation statement
in the alleged extortion case involving suspended Tulungagung Regent
Gatut Sunu Wibowo. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that this
investigation was conducted by the anti-corruption agency through the
examination of nine witnesses on Wednesday. “In today’s examination of
the witnesses, investigators are probing the chronology of the creation
of the resignation statement, which is then suspected to have been used
as a tool to threaten and carry out extortion by the Regent,” Budi told
journalists in Jakarta on Wednesday. According to Budi, the KPK suspects
that the letter was used by Gatut Sunu to extort district apparatus
officials within the Tulungagung Regency Government in East Java.
Meanwhile, the nine witnesses examined by the KPK on Wednesday included
AW, Head of the Protocol Section of the Tulungagung Regency Regional
Secretariat; JTR, Staff of the Protocol Section of the Tulungagung
Regency Regional Secretariat; MMM, Head of Public Welfare Section of the
Tulungagung Regency Regional Secretariat; as well as AL and MG, Personal
Secretaries to the Tulungagung Regent. Previously, the KPK conducted a
raid operation (OTT) in Tulungagung, East Java, on 10 April 2026. The
KPK arrested 18 people in that OTT, including Gatut Sunu Wibowo and his
younger brother, who is also a member of the Tulungagung Regency DPRD,
Jatmiko Dwijo Saputro. A day later, on 11 April 2026, the KPK brought
Gatut Sunu Wibowo and his brother, along with 11 others, to Jakarta for
intensive examination. On the same date, the KPK named Gatut Sunu Wibowo
(GSW) and Dwi Yoga Ambal (YOG), his aide, as suspects in the alleged
extortion and other receipts case within the Tulungagung Regency
Government for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. The letter had already been
signed and stamped but was not dated. Through this modus operandi, the
KPK suspects that Gatut Sunu Wibowo obtained up to Rp2.7 billion from a
target of Rp5 billion from 16 heads of regional device organisations
(OPD) within the Tulungagung Regency Government.
",
