KPK continues Monsanto probe<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will
\nquestion Michael Villareal, former vice president of Harvest
\nInternational consulting company, and a number of Indonesian
\ngovernment officials in connection with the bribery scandal
\ninvolving U.S.-based Monsanto Co.<\/p>\n
KPK deputy chairman Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas said on Tuesday
\nthat Villareal has agreed to come to his office next week. PT
\nMonagro Kimia, an affiliate of Monsanto, is also expected to send
\nits representative to the commission.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the KPK team questioned the deputy environment
\nminister, Masnellyarti Hilman, in relation to the issuance of a
\nletter by former environment minister Nabiel Makarim to former
\nagriculture minister Bungaran Saragih about environment impact
\nassessment for farmers, who expected to grow genetically-modified
\nBollgrad Cotton produced by Monsanto.<\/p>\n
KPK has questioned a number of former ministers after Monsanto
\npleaded guilty to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Security
\nand Exchange Commission for bribing a number of Indonesian
\nofficials in a bid to get a permit for the release of
\ngenetically-modified seeds in Indonesia. -- JP<\/p>",
