The Director of Vocational Institutional Development for Indonesian\nMigrant Workers at the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant\nWorkers (KP2MI), Abri Danar Prabawa, stated that East Java possesses\nsignificant potential to become a centre for preparing high-quality\nIndonesian migrant workers (PMI) through the SMK Go Global programme. He\nnoted that the province\u2019s large number of vocational institutions and\nsecondary vocational schools, totalling more than 2,000, must be\noptimised to develop highly skilled migrant workers.<\/p>\n
Abri explained that the SMK Go Global programme is part of the\ngovernment\u2019s effort to improve the quality of human resources so they\ncan compete and be absorbed in the international job market. He stressed\nthat the programme cannot operate in isolation, requiring synergy\nbetween the central government, regional governments, village\nadministrations, vocational institutions, secondary vocational schools,\nand job training centres to build an integrated ecosystem. This\necosystem would cover the mapping of potential candidates, training, and\ncertification.<\/p>\n
For East Java specifically, he mentioned that several aspects still\nneed strengthening, particularly specific competencies, certification,\nand foreign language skills. These improvements are intended to help\nmigrant workers advance to become professional workers with competencies\nrecognised in destination countries. \u201cWe must build a unified ecosystem.\nWe cannot work separately. We need to work together to prepare human\nresources whose competencies match the needs of the global job market,\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Consequently, Abri added that competency mapping will be directed at\ndetermining the number of people interested in working abroad, the job\nsectors in demand, and the competencies they already possess. This data\nwill then serve as the basis for developing training and competency\nimprovement programmes.
