Kotra offers help to local businesses<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Many foreign businessmen may not know that the
\nKorea Trade Promotion Corporation (Kotra) does much more than
\npromoting exports from South Korea, Seok-Huyn Park, the new
\ndirector of Kotra in Jakarta says.<\/p>\n
\"We can help Indonesian businessmen make contacts with Korean
\ncompanies for trade, investment and various other business
\ndeals,\" Park told The Jakarta Post in an interview.<\/p>\n
Park said that Kotra, which was set up in 1962, had initially
\nfocused its attention on promoting Korean exports in the world
\nmarket.<\/p>\n
He added that now the Korean economy had evolved, making the
\npromotion of investment and business deals between Korean and
\nforeign businessmen a priority for Kotra.<\/p>\n
Kotra, supported by its overseas branches, the Korea Trade
\nCenters, in 82 cities in 64 countries, is thus pushing linkages
\nbetween the Korean economy and economies abroad.<\/p>\n
\"The data base in our headquarters in Seoul contains the
\nprofiles of more than 200,000 companies; this information can be
\ntapped by Indonesian businessmen. Moreover, here in Jakarta we
\nhave all kinds of Korean business directories and company
\nbrochures for Indonesian businessmen to peruse,\" Park said.<\/p>\n
Park stressed the importance of his office in view of the
\nhighly impressive growth of Indonesian-Korean trade ties and of
\nKorean investments in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Indonesian-Korean trade expanded from only US$1.8 billion in
\n1989 to more than $6.2 billion in 1995. Korean businesspeople are
\nnow one of the largest groups of foreign investors here with a
\ntotal capital outlay of around $6.4 billion.<\/p>\n
\"We welcome business inquiries from companies in Indonesia
\nregarding business in Seoul and indeed throughout Korea. Kotra
\nalso operates 10 branches across Korea which cooperate closely
\nwith provincial governments and businessmen,\" Park said.<\/p>\n
Kotra, for example, can help make preparations for Indonesian
\nbusiness missions intending to visit Korea or for participations
\nin various trade exhibitions.<\/p>\n
\"We can help brief Indonesian businessmen on Korean import,
\nexport and investment procedures and identify potential business
\npartners in Korea,\" Park added.<\/p>\n
Kotra also publishes a wide range of trade and product-related
\nmaterials. Two of the most popular are Korea Trade and
\nInvestment, a bimonthly news magazine designed to keep foreign
\nbusinessmen abreast of economic developments in Korea, and Korea
\nTrade, a color product catalog for Korean products.<\/p>\n
Trade missions<\/p>\n
Kotra operates two offices, one at the Seoul airport Kimpo and
\nthe other at Pusan airport Kimhae to serve the needs of foreign
\nbusinessmen and trade and investment missions.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesian businessmen visiting Korea can receive personal
\nhelp at Kotra's head office in Seoul to arrange meetings and
\ncollect information on Korean products and suppliers,\" Park said.<\/p>\n
Kotra is also active in arranging Korean business missions and
\ntrade exhibitions in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"For example, a trade mission from Kyongnam province, led by
\nGovernor Kim Hyuk-Kyu, will arrive in Jakarta next week,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The trade delegation, representing 10 companies, will hold a
\nbusiness meeting at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on May 10.<\/p>\n
The Kyongnam delegation will be followed on May 13-16 by a
\ntrade mission from Taeugu city, headed by Mayor Moon Hi-Gab. That
\nmission is set to feature 20 companies active in the manufacture
\nof machinery, car parts, spectacle frames, fabrics, valve, and
\ncar parking systems.<\/p>\n
Trade missions from the cities of Pusan, Kwangju, and Suwon
\nare slated to follow between June and October.<\/p>\n
\"We are also organizing the participation of about 20 Korean
\ncompanies in the Manufacturing Indonesia 96 exhibition in the
\nKemayoran exhibition grounds in October,\" Park noted.<\/p>\n
The companies will display a wide range of equipment at this
\nexhibition, including sophisticated machinery for industrial
\nplants, he said.<\/p>\n
