A total of 3,026 inmates in Bali received remission in conjunction\nwith the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence. Bali Governor\nWayan Koster encouraged inmates who will return to society to have\nskills and be self-reliant through MSME businesses.<\/p>\n
Based on data from the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate\nGeneral of Corrections, there were 4,938 inmates in Bali as of 17 August\n2026. This number consisted of 3,698 convicts and 1,240 detainees.<\/p>\n
Of that number, 3,060 inmates were proposed to receive the 2026\nGeneral Remission and General Sentence Reduction (PMPU). After the\nrealisation process, 3,026 people received remission or sentence\nreduction.<\/p>\n
The details are that 3,023 convicts and three juvenile inmates\nreceived remission. A total of 2,922 convicts received General Remission\nI (RU I), while 101 people received General Remission II (RU II). Three\njuvenile inmates received PMPU I.<\/p>\n
At Kerobokan Class IIA Prison, 1,041 convicts met the requirements\nand received the 2026 General Remission. A total of 996 people received\nRU I, while 45 people received RU II.<\/p>\n
Of the 45 RU II recipients, 34 convicts were immediately released\nafter receiving sentence reductions.<\/p>\n
Bali Governor Wayan Koster said remission must be a momentum for\ninmates to improve themselves and prepare for life after returning to\nsociety.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey must be grateful so that they become orderly, disciplined\ninmates and can soon return to society,\u201d Koster said on Monday\n(17\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
According to Koster, rehabilitation in prison must provide provisions\nthat inmates can use after release. One of these is through skills that\ncan be developed into businesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cInside, they are given various skills. The hope is that these can be\nuseful, both independently to open MSME businesses and so on,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Koster said the Bali Provincial Government is also opening\nopportunities to accommodate the economic activities of inmates who have\nreturned to society through institutions such as cooperatives.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can accommodate them in the form of cooperative institutions and\nso on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
When asked about the readiness of the cooperatives, Koster said some\nhave already been prepared. \u201cCooperatives, some have been prepared,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
However, remission was not granted to all convicts. At Kerobokan\nPrison, 346 convicts did not meet the requirements and were not proposed\nto receive the 2026 General Remission.<\/p>\n
Of that number, 132 people were recorded in Register F for committing\ndisciplinary violations. Then 90 people had not shown good behaviour for\nsix months.<\/p>\n
In addition, there were seven convicts serving life sentences, 31\npeople undergoing subsidiary fines, eight people undergoing revocation\nof parole, and six people who failed in the integration process.<\/p>\n
Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of\nCorrections Andi Wijaya Rivai emphasised that remission is granted based\non requirements, including inmate behaviour.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe category for receiving remission is good behaviour and there is\nan assessment. If they do not behave well, they certainly do not receive\nremission and do not commit violations,\u201d Andi said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the amount of remission is given according to the\nlength of time the inmate has served their sentence.<\/p>\n
\u201cA minimum of two months, a maximum of five months, depending on how\nlong they have served their sentence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Andi added that granting remission is not only a reward for\nfulfilling requirements, but also part of the rehabilitation process so\nthat inmates can return to society.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Kerobokan Prison still faces overcapacity\nproblems. As of 17 August 2026, the number of occupants reached 1,866\npeople, while the prison capacity is only 1,480 people. This means there\nis an overcapacity of 26.08 percent.<\/p>\n
Regarding the plan to relocate Kerobokan Prison, Koster said the\nprocess is still ongoing.<\/p>\n
\u201cStill in process,\u201d Koster said briefly.<\/p>\n
With the granting of remission, the government hopes that inmates who\nreturn to society will not repeat legal violations, but will be able to\nutilise the skills acquired during rehabilitation to build a more\nindependent life.<\/p>\n
A total of 3,170 convicts and juvenile inmates in West Nusa Tenggara\n(NTB) received remission and sentence reduction in conjunction with the\n81st anniversary of Indonesian independence. Of that number, 26 people\nwere immediately released.<\/p>\n
The handover of the Remission Decree was carried out by NTB Governor\nLalu Muhammad Iqbal to inmate representatives at West Lombok Class IIA\nPrison on Monday (17\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
Of the total 3,170 recipients, 3,129 were convicts who received\nGeneral Remission (RU). The details are that 3,104 people received RU I\nin the form of partial sentence reduction and 25 people received RU II\nor immediate release.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, 41 juvenile inmates received General Sentence Reduction\n(PMPU). A total of 40 juveniles received PMPU I, while one juvenile\ninmate received PMPU II or immediate release.<\/p>\n
West Lombok Class IIA Prison was the Correctional Technical\nImplementation Unit with the highest number of remission recipients in\nNTB, namely 1,256 people. Next was Sumbawa Besar Class IIA Prison with\n592 people and Dompu Class IIB Prison with 386 people.<\/p>\n
The amount of remission and sentence reduction given to convicts and\njuvenile inmates ranged from one to six months.<\/p>\n
NTB Governor Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said remission is a form of state\nappreciation to inmates who meet the requirements. According to him,\nremission is also part of the rehabilitation process so that inmates are\nready to return to society.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Independence Day momentum is expected to be an encouragement for\nremission recipients to continue improving their quality so that they\nare ready to return to society as better, productive and responsible\nindividuals,\u201d Iqbal said while reading the message of the Minister of\nImmigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto.<\/p>\n
