Bali Governor Wayan Koster has stated that the situation is becoming conducive following the ban on sending organic waste to the Suwung Landfill starting 1 April 2026, with the number of trucks accessing the site reduced by 50 percent from over 500 daily. After a coordination meeting with the Ministry of Environment, Koster highlighted progress in waste management plans, including resident education on sorting at source and recruitment of personnel for sorting stations, aiming for complete closure of the landfill to organic and residual waste by 31 July. Local governments in Denpasar and Badung are preparing composter bags, though demand exceeds supply, which could accelerate on-site waste processing into compost if targets are met.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has claimed that the situation is starting
to become conducive following the prohibition on sending organic waste
to the Suwung Landfill from 1 April 2026. He made this statement after a
meeting with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry at the Bali
Governor’s Office on Tuesday (7/4/2026). “Up to this date, the situation
is conducive and we hope that the target of 31 July will see the Suwung
Landfill completely closed to both organic waste and residues. So
everything must be managed well,” Koster said. Koster also revealed the
results of the coordination meeting, including the challenges faced and
the local government’s well-thought-out plans for waste management.
“Secondly, the residual waste transporters organised by self-management
have started to realise that, at the beginning there was some commotion
because the trucks were stopped and not allowed in,” he explained. “Now
there are no more such incidents, so this is progress,” Koster added.
Furthermore, Koster continued, the number of trucks heading to the
Suwung Landfill has started to decrease by 50 percent. “Before 1 April,
it reached more than 500 trucks per day. Now it has decreased far by 50
percent on average. There has been tremendous progress,” said the
Governor from Buleleng. The Denpasar City Government and Badung Regency
Government have also conducted education for residents to sort waste at
the household level. They have also recruited personnel for sorting at
TPS3R stations. “If the residents can sort it themselves in their
banjars, then there is no need for sorting at TPS3R, so it can be
directly processed into compost. It will be even faster,” he explained.
The provision of composter bags is also being prepared by the Denpasar
City Government and Badung Regency Government. However, the estimated
quantity has not yet been able to meet 100 percent due to high demand.
“The target is 176,000 composter bags but only 40,000 have been
obtained. If this can reach the target, waste processing at the source
will be faster,” Koster emphasised.
",
