Koreas set up data communications<\/p>\n
SEOUL (AFP): The two Koreas have set up their first-ever
\ndirect data-communications network through their border liaison
\noffices which are set to reopen next week, South Korean officials
\nsaid on Friday.<\/p>\n
Unification ministry spokesman Lee Kwan-Sei said the move had
\nbeen made possible following the installation of fiber-optic
\ncables at the truce village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized
\nzone between the two sides.<\/p>\n
\"Now both Koreas are able to do high-tech data communications
\nthrough computers,\" Lee said in a statement.<\/p>\n
In the past five decades, a mere handful of telephone lines
\nformed the only direct means of communication between the two
\nKoreas, which have been technically at war since their 1950 to
\n1953 conflict.<\/p>\n
A total of five data-communications lines will now help the
\ntwo Koreas exchange written texts, voices and images, he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the fiber-optic cables included around 300
\nlines for telephones and one for television.<\/p>",
