        "content": "<p>Korea Telecom interested in RI projects<\/p>\n<p>SEOUL (JP): Korea Telecom is preparing telecommunications <br>\nprojects in Indonesia under its plan to expand operations in <br>\nother countries, particularly those in Asia and Latin America, <br>\nexecutives of South Korea's state-owned company said.<\/p>\n<p>Korea Telecom's manager of overseas cooperation, Jong-Sun <br>\nYoon, and deputy director, So Hoo-Cheol, told Indonesian <br>\nreporters visiting the company's headquarters here over the <br>\nweekend that the company will likely develop projects jointly <br>\nwith an Indonesian partner under a build-operate-and-transfer <br>\nscheme within Indonesia's telecommunications infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The executives said Korea Telecom will soon look for <br>\nIndonesian projects it considers appropriate and find local <br>\npartners.<\/p>\n<p>Korea Telecom and Indonesia's international telecommunications <br>\ncompany, PT Indosat, signed a memorandum of understanding earlier <br>\nthis year for cooperation in telecommunication projects in <br>\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n<p>A senior expert from Indosat, D. Habimono Koesoebjono, was <br>\nhere last week to hold several meetings with Korea Telecom's <br>\nexecutives and experts, but he refused to give any comments on <br>\nplanned cooperation between the two companies.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave, who <br>\nwas here to attend the 43rd conference of the Pacific Asia Travel <br>\nAssociation, told The Jakarta Post that the Indonesian government <br>\nwill welcome Korea Telecom's participation in the country's <br>\ntelecommunications development.<\/p>\n<p>\"Telecommunications development in Korea is very fast. I think <br>\nit will be good if Korea Telecom is involved in Indonesian <br>\ntelecommunications projects,\" he said after meeting with the <br>\ncompany's president Cho Paek-Jae.<\/p>\n<p>Joop said that since the mid-1970s, the company has <br>\nsuccessfully installed 21 million telephone lines throughout <br>\nSouth Korea, with a population of about 44 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian government aims at installing five million <br>\ntelephone lines during the sixth Five-Year Development Plan <br>\n(Repelita VI period, which began early this month). The state-<br>\nowned domestic telecommunications company, PT Telekomunikasi <br>\nIndonesia (Telkom), installed 2.2 million lines during Repelita <br>\nV.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom will construct three million telephone lines during <br>\nRepelita VI and the other two million will be offered to private <br>\ncompanies.
