Korea Telecom interested in RI projects<\/p>\n
SEOUL (JP): Korea Telecom is preparing telecommunications
\nprojects in Indonesia under its plan to expand operations in
\nother countries, particularly those in Asia and Latin America,
\nexecutives of South Korea's state-owned company said.<\/p>\n
Korea Telecom's manager of overseas cooperation, Jong-Sun
\nYoon, and deputy director, So Hoo-Cheol, told Indonesian
\nreporters visiting the company's headquarters here over the
\nweekend that the company will likely develop projects jointly
\nwith an Indonesian partner under a build-operate-and-transfer
\nscheme within Indonesia's telecommunications infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The executives said Korea Telecom will soon look for
\nIndonesian projects it considers appropriate and find local
\npartners.<\/p>\n
Korea Telecom and Indonesia's international telecommunications
\ncompany, PT Indosat, signed a memorandum of understanding earlier
\nthis year for cooperation in telecommunication projects in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
A senior expert from Indosat, D. Habimono Koesoebjono, was
\nhere last week to hold several meetings with Korea Telecom's
\nexecutives and experts, but he refused to give any comments on
\nplanned cooperation between the two companies.<\/p>\n
Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave, who
\nwas here to attend the 43rd conference of the Pacific Asia Travel
\nAssociation, told The Jakarta Post that the Indonesian government
\nwill welcome Korea Telecom's participation in the country's
\ntelecommunications development.<\/p>\n
\"Telecommunications development in Korea is very fast. I think
\nit will be good if Korea Telecom is involved in Indonesian
\ntelecommunications projects,\" he said after meeting with the
\ncompany's president Cho Paek-Jae.<\/p>\n
Joop said that since the mid-1970s, the company has
\nsuccessfully installed 21 million telephone lines throughout
\nSouth Korea, with a population of about 44 million.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government aims at installing five million
\ntelephone lines during the sixth Five-Year Development Plan
\n(Repelita VI period, which began early this month). The state-
\nowned domestic telecommunications company, PT Telekomunikasi
\nIndonesia (Telkom), installed 2.2 million lines during Repelita
\nV.<\/p>\n
Telkom will construct three million telephone lines during
\nRepelita VI and the other two million will be offered to private
