Kopaja criticizes policy on new buses<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city public transportation cooperative
\n(Kopaja) has demanded simpler procedures in buying new buses for
\nits members in efforts to them save money.<\/p>\n
The head of the cooperative, V.W. Sijabat, said over the
\nweekend that the current procedure is complicated and increases
\nthe price of new buses.<\/p>\n
"Our members have been forced to buy new buses through the
\npublic transport owners association (Organda), while the price of
\nbuses is higher than that set by each make's sole distributor. We
\nwant to deal directly with the importers in the future, and the
\ncurrent procedure should be revised," Sijabat said.<\/p>\n
He alleged that there was collusion between offices and
\ninstitutions involved in the purchasing process.<\/p>\n
He accused certain parties of maintaining the procedure for
\ntheir own interests, with the cooperative members becoming the
\nvictims.<\/p>\n
"We have never obligated them to buy the new buses through the
\norganization," head of Organda Jakarta, Aip Sjarifuddin, told The
\nJakarta Post over the weekend.<\/p>\n
He said that many vehicle owners bought new vehicles from
\ndealers at high prices.<\/p>\n
Aip blamed the cooperative for not helping its members buy new
\nbuses.<\/p>\n
He said that when vehicle owners intend to replace old fleets
\nthey make deals with dealers or middlemen without involving the
\ncooperative.<\/p>\n
The cooperative claims it can not purchases buses directly
\nfrom sole distributors of different bus makes due to the
\nprocedures outlined by Organda.<\/p>\n
Aip said, however, that the organization is prepared to help
\nthe cooperative deal directly with sole distributors.<\/p>\n
"In this way the cooperative members would be able to save
\nmoney as authorized distributors sell vehicles cheaper than
\ndealers or brokers," he said.<\/p>\n
A sole distributor may sell a bus for Rp 50 million, while a
\ndealer's price may be Rp 51 million and a broker's Rp 53 million,
