        "content": "<p>Kontras responds<\/p>\n<p>From Media Indonesia<\/p>\n<p>The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence <br>\n(Kontras) would like to thank the concern and sympathy for our <br>\nwork that was expressed in Mr. Donald Panjaitan's letter in The <br>\nJakarta Post on Sept. 27, 2001. Such concern and sympathy really <br>\nlends substance to our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, we must refute his statement that we have <br>\nignored human rights violations by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) <br>\nand Free Papua Organization (OPM). When making public the result <br>\nof our investigation, we reported human rights violations by GAM. <br>\nIn our press release of Aug. 22, 2001, we explained that the <br>\nmonitoring conducted between January and August 2001 came up with <br>\n20 cases of human right violations involving GAM, which claimed <br>\n44 lives.<\/p>\n<p>Following the murder of Dayan Dawood, the rector of Syiah <br>\nKuala University in Banda Aceh, we issued on Sept. 7, 2001 a <br>\npress release expressing our condolences on and harsh criticism <br>\nof the murder.<\/p>\n<p>We are yet to confirm that Dayan Dawood was murdered by GAM, <br>\nas Mr. Panjaitan has alleged, because violence in Aceh is <br>\ncommitted not only by the Indonesian Military\/Police and GAM but <br>\nalso by unidentified armed groups, which may be affiliated to <br>\neither the Indonesian Military\/Police or GAM.<\/p>\n<p>MUNAMAN<\/p>\n<p>Executive Board Coordinator<\/p>\n<p>Kontras<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta<\/p>",
