KONI to record groups to avoid sending TKI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Sports Council (KONI) will record
\nthe number of contingent members, including supporters, who will
\ntake part in overseas tournaments to avoid sending illegal
\nmigrant workers (TKI) pretending to be members of the delegation.<\/p>\n
KONI secretary-general Rudolf S. Warouw said on Friday that
\nsports organizations often failed to report results and to meet
\nwith chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar upon arrival in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He said some sports organizations might be able to cheat the
\ncouncil and foreign embassies that issue visas because KONI
\nfailed to recheck.<\/p>\n
\"We are also responsible for the fraud. We must do something
\nto avoid this. We don't want foreign embassies to lose their
\nconfidence in us because some people misuse the visas,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Warouw said KONI always verified the name of the contingents,
\ntheir functions, their preparation and their purposes abroad
\nbefore granting approval.<\/p>\n
\"We have to be very careful because we don't want to create
\nany problems. We should recheck if all the members of the
\ncontingents have returned. Sports organizations usually report to
\nthe chairman before they leave and they fail to inform us when
\nthey return.<\/p>\n
\"It's always useful to recheck so KONI and sports
\norganizations won't be cheated.\"<\/p>\n
Sports organizations must submit a list of their contingents
\nto the council and have it approved by the office of the state
\nminister of youth affairs and sports. The council will then issue
\na confirmation letter to the immigration department.<\/p>\n
Warouw was responding to allegations that former secretary-
\ngeneral of the Indonesian Tae Kwon Do Association (TI) Ahmad
\nZarkasih reportedly approved sending illegal workers to the
\nInter-University tae kwon do championships in Kaohsiung, China
\nTaipei, which cost Ahmad his post.<\/p>\n
The case is now being handled by TI chairman Suharto. The
\nlatter also appointed TI's official in charge of the student and
\ncollege division Adrian Lumowa to replace Zarkasih until new
\nmanagement could be set up at a national congress in 2001.<\/p>\n
Reports said foreign embassies refused to issue visas to
\nIndonesian athletes and sports contingents who wish to compete
\noverseas for fear that some of the contingents would not return
\nto Indonesia, but instead seek work in that country.<\/p>\n
Warouw said TI had not reported Zarkasih's resignation to the
\ncouncil.<\/p>\n
\"There has not been any proof that the former secretary-
\ngeneral approved sending illegal workers. We are still waiting
