KONI to give SEAG athletes doping tests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Sports Council (KONI) has announced
\nit will hold pre-competition doping tests for selected members of
\nthe 20th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games contingent.<\/p>\n
National training director Imron ZS said on Tuesday the pre-
\ncompetition tests next week were aimed at reducing any possible
\nproblems at the Aug. 7 to Aug. 15 biennial event.<\/p>\n
\"We don't want to take any risks by sending athletes who might
\nfail the doping test. We prefer to be a 'clean' contingent rather
\nthan an overall champion with athletes found guilty of using
\nbanned substances,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta doping laboratory located in Rawasari, Central
\nJakarta, has offered to hold the pre-competition testing at no
\ncost to KONI.<\/p>\n
Imron said he would recommend athletes not to consume any
\nmedications without first consulting the official team doctor.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's men's cyclist Tonton Susanto was found guilty of
\nusing amphetamines during the 19th SEA Games here two years ago.
\nHe was banned from national and international tournaments for
\napproximately one year.<\/p>\n
KONI's chief of Sports Science Commission (KIOR), Carmen
\nJahya, said she would consult the contingent's four supervisors
\nbefore selecting athletes to undergo the test.<\/p>\n
Carmen said three women's shooters, who left for Brunei
\nDarussalam in early July for pre-competition training and
\nacclimatization would not be tested.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Imron said President B.J. Habibie had yet to decide
\nwhen he would visit the training centers around the Senayan
\nsports complex.<\/p>\n
KONI chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar earlier urged ministers and
\nthe President to visit the training sites to boost the athletes'
\nfighting spirit.<\/p>\n
\"We will request information from the state secretary to find
\nout whether the President will visit the training sites before or
\nafter he officially inaugurates the contingent,\" Imron said.<\/p>\n
Habibie is scheduled to inaugurate the contingent some time
\nbetween July 21 and July 23.<\/p>\n
Imron also said KONI would ask the Indonesian Taekwondo
\nAssociation (TI) to include Juana Wangsa Putri and Dominggus Boro
\nin the Games squad.<\/p>\n
He said Wismoyo would repeat the request after the Taekwon
\nDoins -- Juana, Dominggus and Veronika Widyarini -- returned home
\nfrom Zagreb, Croatia, on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The three athletes competed in the world pre-Olympics
\nqualifying round last week.<\/p>\n
Juana qualified for the Olympics, but her two compatriots were
\nnot successful. Both Dominggus and Veronika will have a second
\nchance in the Asian continental qualification event in Manila.<\/p>\n
\"We will ask TI to include Juana and Dominggus in the SEA
\nGames team. TI officials had said both Taekwon Doins were
\nprepared for the Olympics, but Pak Wismoyo insisted they could
\nuse the Games as a stepping stone to compete in bigger events
\nlike the Olympics,\" Imron said.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesia could still include both athletes' names,
\ndespite a team submission deadline of July 10.<\/p>\n
Imron said the council would add both athletes' names if the
\norganizing committee refused to cancel its decision on karate
\nevents. The decision allows only one athlete from each
\nparticipating country to compete in a division.<\/p>\n
The controversial decision was issued in late June. In
\nprevious events, each country was allowed to field two karatekas
