KONI to call 39 athletes for Olympics training<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Sports Council (KONI) official in
\ncharge of athletes development, Mochammad Hindarto, announced on
\nTuesday that 39 athletes would participate in training for the
\n2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.<\/p>\n
The 39 athletes include Supriati Sutono, Irene Truitje Yoseph
\nand Johannes Murray (track and field), Juana Wangsa Putri
\n(taekwondo), Oka Sulaksana (windsurfing), Hamdiah (archery) and
\nRichard Sam Bera, Albert and Felix Sutanto and Wisnu Wardhana
\n(swimming).<\/p>\n
Other sports -- boxing, rowing and weightlifting -- are still
\nwaiting for results of the prequalifying rounds for the Olympics.<\/p>\n
Some Indonesian shuttlers, the country's main hope for golds
\nat the Olympics have qualified for the Games. They are Hendrawan,
\nBudi Santoso and Taufik Hidayat in the men's singles and Candra
\nWijaya, Tony Gunawan, Ricky Subagja, Rexy Mainaky, Flandy
\nLimpele, Eng Hian, Antonius and Denny Kantono in the men's
\ndoubles.<\/p>\n
Hindarto said KONI would support decisions made by sports
\norganizations to bar athletes -- who are concentrating on
\npreparing for the Olympics -- to miss next year's National Games
\n(PON).<\/p>\n
\"KONI will back up sports organizations' decisions if they
\nthink that PON will not support athlete preparations during
\ntraining programs for the Olympics.<\/p>\n
\"Sports experts have already warned us on the risk of injuries
\nif the athletes force themselves to compete at PON,\" he said.<\/p>\n
KONI's secretary-general Rudolf Warouw said he and deputy
\nHarsuki would attend the chef de mission meetings in Sydney
\nscheduled for the end of this month.<\/p>\n
\"KONI has yet to decide who is the chef de mission for next
\nyear but the meeting will discuss athletes' accommodation and
\ntransportation, a sports seminar during the Olympics and other
\nthings relating to the Olympic's preparation in general.\"<\/p>\n
Warouw said KONI would call sports organizations to start
\ndiscussing each organization's programs prior to the Olympics
\nnational training.<\/p>\n
SEA Games<\/p>\n
KONI plans to start its training program for the 2001
\nSoutheast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur in August 2000.<\/p>\n
Hindarto said training would start after athletes compete in
\nnext year's PON to be held in Surabaya in June.<\/p>\n
\"We will start the Olympics training after PON, probably in
\nAugust, with a consideration that we will have a year of
\npreparation prior to the SEA Games.\"<\/p>\n
Hindarto said 2001 SEA Games organizers would endorse sports
\nto be featured in the biennial event in the SEA Games federation
\nmeeting in February.<\/p>\n
\"We can prepare our athletes to attend the centralized
\ntraining programs despite their decentralized preparation for PON
\nin their respective areas,\" he said, adding that between 500 and
\n600 athletes were expected to attend training.<\/p>\n
Indonesia aims to improve its performance in the 2001 SEA
\nGames after its poor showing in the 1999 Games in Brunei
\nDarussalam in August. KONI blamed the athlete's poor performance
\non the short training period and budget constraints.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, the defending champion, finished third by taking
\nhome 44 golds, 43 silvers and 58 bronzes. The result was the
\nworst by Indonesia since the country competed in the Games for
\nthe first time in 1977.<\/p>\n
Arch rival Thailand bagged 64 golds, 48 silvers and 56
\nbronzes, followed by dark horse Malaysia with 58 golds, 46
