KONI takes over wushu training duties<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The 19th SEA Games training director, Djoko
\nPramono, has announced that he has taken charge of wushu training
\nbecause the athletes had not been following correct training
\nprograms.<\/p>\n
Djoko said Friday that his decision to replace Putu Wijaya,
\nthe former wushu training director, was backed by the National
\nSports Council chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar.<\/p>\n
\"After I made surprise visits to the training sessions several
\ntimes, I found out the training wasn't going smoothly. Sometimes
\nthey practiced and sometimes the athletes had to practice by
\nthemselves because the coach didn't show,\" Djoko said.<\/p>\n
Sixteen gold medals for Wushu, a Chinese martial art, are
\noffered at the Games. But the Indonesian Wushu Association has
\nfailed to create stimulating training conditions.<\/p>\n
The association has been troubled by internal problems which
\nbegan several months ago. Officials of the association are
\ndivided, one half in support of chairman Antonius Haliman and the
\nother challenging his leadership.<\/p>\n
The problem has turned personal among the officials
\ninfluencing the training for the Games.<\/p>\n
\"The reorganization is for our red-and-white flag, not for a
\ncertain group of people who have an interest in the training,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"The problem occurred because some people took advantage of
\nthe training for their own interest,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Kompas reported that the Chinese coach, due to arrive in
\nFebruary, could only come in May.<\/p>\n
\"He still has administrative problems in China,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Fritz E Simanjuntak, the training spokesman, said that
\nalthough the action taken by the council was late, it was much
\nbetter than ignoring the problem.<\/p>\n
\"We have to save our chances in wushu, rather than do nothing
\nat all,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Wushu, is taught in two ways; sansho or fighting in Jakarta,
\nand tao or the art of weapons in Surabaya and Medan, North
