KONI still unsure about its future<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Sports Council (KONI) vice chairman
\nArie Sudewo said on Tuesday that the council might be under the
\nsupervision of a special directorate general of the Ministry of
\nNational Education.<\/p>\n
\"We have been informed that there will be a special
\ndirectorate general on sports development. But this has yet to be
\nfinalized,\" he told reporters after meeting with representatives
\nfrom the ministry's Directorate General of Informal Education and
\nSports, the State Ministry for Administrative Reform and the
\nMinistry of Home Affairs and Regional Autonomy.<\/p>\n
Arie said KONI would remain a non-governmental organization
\nand would not be under direct control of the ministry.<\/p>\n
\"The policy on sports development will be set up by the
\ngovernment and the legislators in the State Guidelines. We will
\nonly carry on what has been endorsed. The relationship between
\nthe government and the council is based on partnership and not on
\nechelon,\" he said.<\/p>\n
But he admitted that the council still needed financial
\nsupport from the government.<\/p>\n
He also said that KONI would be responsible for the people.
\n\"We will also make an accountability report on any multi sports
\nevent that we participate in.\"<\/p>\n
President Abdurrahman Wahid dissolved the office of the state
\nminister of youth affairs and sports during the Cabinet reshuffle
\nlast month.<\/p>\n
Gus Dur, as the President is known, said later that KONI would
\nbe responsible for national sports development, thus he ended
\nyears of overlapping roles by the council and the now defunct
\noffice of the state minister.<\/p>\n
Arie said KONI would need a structural change in its
\norganization in a bid to empower the council.<\/p>\n
\"KONI may need structural adjustment. It needs professional
\nmanagement,\" he said, adding that an adjustment did not
\nnecessarily mean a reshuffle.<\/p>\n
\"There will be no dismissals or replacements. We can adjust
\nthe structure if we find out that an official is not the right
\nperson for a certain job,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Arie said the council and related ministries and institutions
\nwould have to share four tasks to develop amateur and
\nprofessional sports, sports in schools, traditional sports and
\ncommunity sports.<\/p>\n
\"We have to share our jobs. But we can't decide this right
\nnow. We are still considering whether KONI will supervise all
\nkinds of sports development or if it will only be responsible for
\namateur and professional sports development,\" he said.<\/p>\n
KONI will gather opinions from sports organizations, sports
\nexperts and the sports community before reaching a decision on
\nwhat form the council will take after the closing of the state
\nminister's office.<\/p>\n
Arie said he had not received any information about
\norganizations which were set up to develop sports. So far, the
\ngovernment recognized KONI as the only body to supervise amateur
