KONI ruling upsets PHRI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian hockey association will abide by
\nthe National Sports Council's decision to bar the hockey team
\nfrom participating in the 18th Southeast Asian Games, despite
\ndisagreeing with the council's reasoning.<\/p>\n
The chief of the PHRI hockey association, Raj Kumar Singh,
\ndisagreed yesterday with the sports council (KONI) and training
\ndirector Moch. Hindarto's claim that the hockey team is not
\nprepared for the Dec. 9-17 SEA games.<\/p>\n
Noting that PHRI was late in planning their centralized
\ntraining program and that there has been no hockey activity for
\nthe past two years, Hindarto said Indonesia's hockey players
\nwould not match their Southeast Asian counterparts.<\/p>\n
\"The announcement is discouraging to our athletes that have
\nbeen undergoing training in their respective provinces,\" Singh
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
PHRI will start an intensive training session in July rather
\nthan this month as suggested by KONI, after the national
\nchampionship in June. \"We will select our national team from the
\nchampionship,\" Singh said.<\/p>\n
\"We could easily start a centralized training program this
\nmonth, but would it be fruitful?\" he asked.<\/p>\n
\"It would be better if KONI straightforwardly said that it had
\nno funding for us because we have no chance of winning the gold
\nmedal,\" an emotion-filled Singh said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian hockey team capped its modest run at the 1989
\nSEA Games in Kuala Lumpur with a bronze medal.<\/p>\n
Hockey made its last appearance in the 1989 SEA Games, with
\nMalaysia sweeping the men's and women's gold medals. Singapore
