        "content": "<p>KONI reassured over Asiad team<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto has told the Indonesian<br>\nSports Council (KONI) and sports organizations not to be<br>\ndiscouraged if only a small team is sent to the Asian Games in<br>\nThailand this December.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We have to economize our foreign exchange. Although we have<br>\nreceived financial support from the people, it is still a foreign<br>\nexchange expenditure,&quot; State Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports<br>\nHayono Isman said after meeting Soeharto yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Hayono met Soeharto to report on the Indonesian team&apos;s<br>\npreparations for the Asian Games, to be held from Dec. 6-Dec. 20<br>\nin Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia is trying hard to improve its ranking at the Asian<br>\nGames, which was 11th at the last quadrennial meet.<\/p>\n<p>Hayono said Indonesia was being forced to cut the number of<br>\nathletes in the team due to the economic crisis affecting the<br>\ncountry.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Soeharto has ordered KONI only to send athletes to the<br>\nBangkok Games from sports which could win medals, such as<br>\nbadminton and weightlifting,&quot; Hayono said.
