KONI ready to replace Hasan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Sports Council (KONI) has three
\ncandidates ready to replace Mohamad \"Bob\" Hasan on the
\nInternational Olympic Committee (IOC).<\/p>\n
\"The suspension (of Bob Hasan) is not yet final because the
\nIOC is still waiting for reports from its ethics commission. The
\nethics commission has yet to contact KONI to get our opinion,\"
\nKONI vice chairman Arie Sudewo said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"But if the IOC decides to suspend Hasan's membership, we
\nexpect his seat will be given to another Indonesian. KONI has
\nprepared three candidates to fill the vacant position.\"<\/p>\n
Arie was commenting on the IOC's decision to suspend Hasan on
\nTuesday after receiving a recommendation from its ethics
\ncommission. Hasan is currently serving a six-year jail term for
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
\"KONI has approached and received support from Southeast Asian
\ncountries that (Hasan's) replacement should be an Indonesian. But
\nI can't give you the names now because KONI chairman Wismoyo
\nArismunandar has yet to make a final decision on which candidate
\nwe will nominate (to replace Hasan),\" Arie said.<\/p>\n
\"However, I can guarantee you that all three of the candidates
\nare known for their good track records in sports.\"<\/p>\n
\"KONI can only nominate a candidate and recommend that the
\nreplacement (for Hasan) be an Indonesian, but the IOC has the
\nauthority to decide.\"<\/p>\n
Arie also said that KONI was ready to help if the IOC's ethics
\ncommission visited Indonesia to gather information on Hasan's
\ncase.<\/p>\n
\"We are prepared, but I don't know what information would have
\nto be given because the commission has not yet sent any questions
\nor a delegation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The ethics commission's chief investigator, Francois Werner,
\nsaid he would travel here if necessary to gather further
\ninformation on Hasan.<\/p>\n
\"We need to make further inquiries to find out what (Hasan)
\nhas done and why he has done it,\" he was quoted as saying by AP
\non Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Even as he serves his jail term, Hasan still chairs the
\nIndonesian Athletics Association (PASI) and the Indonesian
\nGymnastics Association.<\/p>\n
Interviewed separately, PASI secretary-general Tigor Tanjung
\nsaid that the decision by the IOC had nothing to do with Hasan's
