KONI gets Rp 5 billion for Olympics preparation<\/p>\n

The National Sports Council (KONI) received Rp 5 billion
\n(US$590,000) in financial assistance from the Bung Karno Sports
\nComplex management (BPGBK) on Tuesday to help cover the cost of
\nIndonesian delegation for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
According the chef-de-mission, Indra Kartasasmita, the money
\nwould only cover a part of the Rp 25.7 billion total needed to
\nprepare and send the national squad to Greece.<\/p>\n
KONI, Indra added, would also get another Rp 5 billion package
\npledged by the National Education Ministry through the
\nDirectorate General for Sports Affairs.<\/p>\n
Given the soaring budget, the amount pledged would be far less
\nthan what is needed, but Indra said that he was optimistic about
\ngetting all the money, as KONI was currently negotiating for
\nsponsorships.<\/p>\n
\"We will manage to cover the remaining cost, somehow,\" he
\nsaid, adding that KONI chairman Agum Gumelar was currently in
\ntalks with several sponsors.<\/p>\n
Indra, who is also in charge of planning and budgeting affairs
\nat the National Sports Council (KONI), said that Rp 14.13 billion
\nof the fund would be allocated to cover expenses during the
\ntraining program, Rp 5.6 billion for the dispatch of the
\ndelegation to the event, and Rp 5.9 billion for bonuses and
\nallowances.<\/p>\n
More financial help is also expected from official sponsors of
\nthe Olympics through the International Olympic Committee (IOC),
\nIndra said.<\/p>\n
The 2004 Olympics will run from Aug. 13 to 29.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has secured 18 slots so far for the world's biggest
\nmulti-event sporting spectacle: archery (2), swimming (3),
\nweightlifting (7), windsurfing (1), tae kwon do (2), tennis (1)
\nand track and field (2).<\/p>\n
The tennis and track-and-field qualifiers will be going to
\nAthens as wild card recipients.<\/p>\n
KONI is counting on more spots from cycling, badminton,
\nrowing, judo, boxing, beach volleyball and diving, as the
\nqualifiying for those has not been finalized.<\/p>",
