'KONI boss needs President's nod'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Sports Council must ask for
\nPresident Soeharto's approval of its elected chairman, the
\ncouncil's top official Surono said.<\/p>\n
\"Sports cannot be separated from our national development
\nprogram as a whole. That's why the council needs the President's
\nblessing, once it manages to line up its chairmanship board,\"
\nSurono said yesterday, after the final meeting prior to the
\ncouncil's national congress, which starts tomorrow.<\/p>\n
The National Sports Council was set up in 1966 through a
\npresidential decree. A total of 41 sports and board game
\norganizations are currently under its auspices.<\/p>\n
The sports council's governing body will choose an electoral
\nboard of three during the congress. That board will announce the
\ncouncil's new president at the conclusion of the meeting.<\/p>\n
Surono said he was prepared to give his advice about the ideal
\nchairman upon request of the board. \"I will not step into the
\nelection process,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In the past two days some sports figures revealed their
\nsupport for Army Chief Commander Wismoyo Arismunandar, formerly
\nthree-time chairman of the Indonesian Judo Association, to take
\nSurono's mantle.<\/p>\n
Surono insisted on his quiet stance over succession within the
\norganization he has led for eight years. \"I will disclose my
\nviews upon opening the congress on Monday,\" he said.<\/p>\n
However, he hinted that he would not run for a third term,
\nsaying that the public has their own choice. Jakarta became the
\ncouncil's first chapter to nominate Wismoyo on Friday. Chief of
\nthe chapter, Kusnan Ismukanto, said that Surono and his deputy
\nSoesilo Soedarman also qualify for the top post.<\/p>\n
Most of the 576 participants of the congress, who derive from
\nIndonesia's 27 provinces, arrived yesterday. They are being
\naccommodated at the Hotel Indonesia during their stay. Committee
\nchairman Timbul Thomas Lubis said only 400 participants would
\nattend the opening ceremony at the State Palace tomorrow. (amd)<\/p>",
