KONI appoints more members<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Despite its declaration of streamlining, the
\nNational Sports Council (KONI) on Thursday announced its
\nappointment of 37 commission members to bring the number of its
\nofficials to 64.<\/p>\n
KONI vice chairman Arie Sudewo told a news conference the
\ndecision was made based on a recommendation from February's
\nnational congress.<\/p>\n
\"The recommendation says that each commission comprises three
\nto five people. We respect the recommendation. The number of top
\nKONI officials is only 27,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Commissions are law, honorary sports, training, talent
\nscouting, sports science, education, media and public relations,
\nsports information systems and sports business and industry.<\/p>\n
Council chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar, sports expert Mangombar
\nFerdinand Siregar and the north Sulawesi chapter chairman Evert
\nErens Mangindaan picked the officials.<\/p>\n
Wismoyo declined to attend the conference, saying he had
\nanother appointment after making a speech in the first plenary
\nmeeting with all the officials.<\/p>\n
Arie said the council would install in less than a week a
\nspecial team in charge of the Golden Garuda project.<\/p>\n
\"The team will have to promote the project and also arrange
\nthe long-term program to succeed the project.\"<\/p>\n
The project's aim is to make Indonesia host of the 2006 Asian
\nGames and achieve a ranking of sixth in the medal standings.<\/p>\n
Arie said KONI decided to start the national training program
\nfor the 20th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in June, instead of May,
\nbecause each sport organization has been preparing its athletes
\nsince February.<\/p>\n
\"In June, the nucleus team will be groomed in centralized
\ntraining,\" he said.<\/p>\n
KONI has registered 534 athletes to compete in 20 sports at
\nthe Aug. 7 to Aug. 15 biennial event, to be held this year in
\nBandar Seri Begawan. Its goal is to retain Indonesia's overall
\nmedal title at the event, which offers 235 gold medals in 21
\nsports.<\/p>\n
The country will compete in badminton, basketball, billiards
\nand snooker, bowling, boxing, cycling, soccer, golf, hockey,
\nkarate, pencak silat martial art, sepak takraw, shooting, squash,
\nswimming, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, track and field and
\ntraditional boat racing. It will miss bowls.<\/p>\n
Arie said the council's Rp 5 billion (US$574,710) for training
\nwas short of the Rp 15 billion needed.<\/p>\n
\"We have asked the government for financial help but it will
\nanswer our request by the end of this month,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The council officials will be installed by President B.J.
\nHabibie at the State Palace on Monday. The council also plans to
\ninclude best male and female athletes, best coach and best
\nofficial -- to be announced on Friday evening live on state
\ntelevision network TVRI -- at the ceremony. (yan)<\/p>",
