Komselindo to upgrade its networks into CDMA<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PT Komunikasi Selular Indonesia (Komselindo),
\none of the country's three analog cellular telephone operators,
\nplans to improve its service by upgrading its networks into the
\nCode Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology.<\/p>\n
Komselindo's director of commerce, Zen Smith, said that his
\ncompany had shortlisted three firms out of six overseas suppliers
\nparticipating in the CDMA tender.<\/p>\n
He said that the three qualified firms are Samsung of South
\nKorea, Lucent, a subsidiary of AT&T, and Motorola of the United
\nStates.<\/p>\n
"The winner will be announced in November," he told reporters
\nafter attending Komselindo's gathering with its agents on
\nThursday evening.<\/p>\n
He refused to disclose the size of the CDMA project prepared
\nby Komselindo, which currently runs the narrow-band Advanced
\nMobile Phone Service (AMPS) system with some 100,000 subscribers.<\/p>\n
The company is 65 percent owned by PT Elektrindo Nusantara, an
\naffiliate of the Bimantara Group, and 35 percent by the state-
\nowned domestic telecommunications operator PT Telkom.<\/p>\n
In addition to Komselindo, there are two other AMPS operators
\nin Indonesia, PT Metrosel and PT Telekomindo. Three digital
\nmobile cellular telephone operators are also applying the Global
\nSystem of Mobile communications technology.<\/p>\n
The government has approved the U.S. developed-CDMA
\ntechnology, which can reduce overall network costs and provide
\nexceptional voice quality. Last year, Komselindo ran a CDMA trial
\noperation in Bandung, West Java, in cooperation with AT&T.<\/p>\n
CDMA is being adopted around the world as the wireless
\nindustry standard to deliver digital cellular and personal
\ncommunications services. It offers economical, clear and secure
\nwireless communications.<\/p>\n
Smith said that operators in South Korea and Hong Kong also
\nuse CDMA.<\/p>\n
He said that by applying CDMA, operators will be able to
\nincrease the capacity of analog cellular networks by between six-
\nfold and 10-fold and enable operators to improve service quality
\nto customers.<\/p>\n
"With CDMA, subscribers will have better transmissions and
\nbetter security because the system is safe from fraud and
\ncloning," he said.<\/p>\n
AMPS telephones have been known to suffer from fraud and
\ncloning problems.<\/p>\n
Smith said that his company expects to apply CDMA in August
\n1997, which will also allow its customers to keep and upgrade
\ntheir existing AMPS telephones. (icn)<\/p>",
