Komnas replaces secretary general<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM)
\nnamed Gembong Prijono as its new secretary general replacing
\nAsmara Nababan.<\/p>\n
Gembong, who is secretary general at the ministry of
\nresettlement and regional infrastructure, passed the screening
\nprocess conducted by a human resources consultant company.<\/p>\n
His appointment still needs to be officially approved by
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri next week.<\/p>\n
In a closed-door House of Representatives plenary session, a
\nteam of 13 commission members also approved 20 additional names
\npicked to become possible members of Komnas Ham.<\/p>\n
Nababan, however, stated that he had doubts about the
\ncredibility of the new candidates.<\/p>\n
\"They had previously been rejected by the first joint
\nselection team because there were doubts about their integrity,\"
\nhe stated.<\/p>\n
The 20 new candidates, along with the 14 previously nominated
\ncandidates will be submitted to the House of Representatives
\nwithin the next two weeks. The House will select 17 of the 34
\ncandidates as new members of the national human rights body. --JP<\/p>",
