A member of Indonesia’s National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas
HAM), Amiruddin Al Rahab, stated that Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator
of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras),
has shown improvement following treatment at the Central General
Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM) in Jakarta. According to
Amiruddin, the severe burns from caustic liquid have been managed.

“His eyes have improved somewhat from yesterday,” Amiruddin said when
contacted on Monday, 16 March 2026.

Amiruddin made this statement after visiting Andrie at RSCM on Monday
afternoon, 16 March 2026. He obtained the information from Andrie’s
family.

Amiruddin was unable to meet Andrie in person as he remains in
isolation. “He’s still in isolation. There’s concern about infection,”
he said.

Amiruddin’s purpose in visiting was to ensure that treatment was
proceeding properly at the hospital. He noted that the hospital’s care
has been adequate and Andrie has passed the critical phase. “Hopefully
within the next few days he will recover somewhat,” he stated.

Amiruddin said Andrie’s family is awaiting the doctor’s next steps.
The family has been asked to wait one to two days to learn what comes
next.

Amiruddin expressed hope that the hospital would provide the best
care for Andrie. He also wants the medical costs to be covered by the
state through either the Witness and Victim Protection Institute (LPSK)
or the Ministry of Health.

Komnas HAM will enquire with LPSK and the Health Ministry regarding
funding arrangements for Andrie. To date, his medical expenses remain
covered by a particular party. “Komnas HAM wants to ensure this for
assistance to Andrie,” he said.

He also expressed hope that police would quickly resolve the case.
The longer police take, the greater the opportunity for perpetrators and
masterminds to destroy evidence. “We certainly do not want another case
like Novel Baswedan’s,” he said.

According to Amiruddin, this is a crucial moment for the police force
to demonstrate its capability in solving crimes. “We should not allow
events like this to become hidden statistics,” he stated.

Amiruddin said Komnas HAM wants the entire criminal process to
proceed so that perpetrators can be identified. He noted that failure to
advance this case could constitute a serious human rights violation, as
the state fails to protect its citizens. “On one hand, the state also
fails to address crimes like this which continue to recur,” he said.

He called on all parties to support the police in working quickly and
accurately. This is essential to prevent crimes against activists from
recurring. “If crimes like this are not exposed, do not reach court, it
is the same as giving a licence to barbaric individuals to repeat their
actions,” he said.

Jane Rosalina, Head of the Impunity Monitoring Division of the
Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras), stated
that RSCM doctors have treated the inflammatory reaction caused by the
acidic liquid on Andrie Yunus’s eyes. Andrie remains hospitalised
following this procedure.

“It was anticipated and treatment has been provided by the hospital,”
Jane said at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office in
Jakarta on Monday, 16 March 2026.

Jane said RSCM will subsequently undertake several medical procedures
on Andrie. These are aimed at treating the skin and other body parts
exposed to the acidic liquid.

Andrie is currently in stable condition. He is in intensive care in
the High Care Unit (HCU). Jane could not specify how long treatment
would continue.

Andrie was attacked by two unidentified persons on Thursday evening,
12 March 2026, around 23:37 WIB on Jalan Salemba I Talang in Central
Jakarta. At the time, he was returning home after recording a podcast at
the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office on the topic of
“Remilitarisation and Judicial Review of the TNI Law”.

The perpetrators allegedly arrived on a motorbike and sprayed caustic
liquid at the victim before fleeing.

Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and
Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra suspected that the attack on Andrie
followed an organised pattern. According to Yusril, the pattern of
attack suggested there was possible planning, meaning the investigation
should not stop at those who carried out the attack.

“The pattern of attack appears to be planned and organised, so the
investigation into this incident should not stop at the executor level,
but must also uncover the intellectual actors behind it,” Yusril said in
a written statement on Friday, 13 March 2026.

He called on law enforcement officials, particularly the police, to
conduct a thorough investigation to identify those behind the attack. “I
call on law enforcement officials, particularly the police, to ensure a
thorough investigation reaching the intellectual actors, not just the
field perpetrators,” he said.

Yusril stated that he had coordinated with investigators at Metro
Jaya Police and the Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate, who are
currently investigating the case. To date, authorities have not publicly
released any investigative updates.
",
