The Kolonodale Class III Correctional Facility (Lapas) has launched\nan innovative independence-building programme called \u2018Gerobak Sayur\u2019\n(Vegetable Cart), which has garnered appreciation from the Central\nSulawesi Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections\n(Kanwil Ditjenpas). The programme is designed not only to equip inmates\nwith farming skills but also to provide them with a comprehensive\nunderstanding of entrepreneurship by involving them in the entire\nbusiness chain, from cultivation to marketing. During harvest periods,\ninmates sell their organically grown produce, including kale, spinach,\nmustard greens, aubergines, chillies, and long beans, directly to the\nlocal community from a dedicated stall. These organic commodities,\nharvested from the prison\u2019s own agricultural land, are sold at very\naffordable prices.<\/p>\n
Head of the Central Sulawesi Kanwil Ditjenpas, Herman Mulawarman,\nstated that inmate development must be oriented towards tangible results\nand real benefits. He emphasised that the programme ensures inmates are\nnot only trained in production but also in marketing, preparing them for\neconomic independence after their release. Herman noted that this\ninnovation aligns with the policy direction of the Directorate General\nof Corrections and the 15 Action Programmes of the Ministry of\nImmigration and Corrections, particularly in strengthening independence\nand supporting the National Food Security programme. He encouraged all\nTechnical Implementation Units (UPT) in the region to develop similarly\nproductive and adaptive programmes.<\/p>\n
