Kofi Annan's statement<\/p>\n

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in
\nIndonesia only one day after coordinating minister for political
\naffairs and security Gen. Wiranto was suspended from office by
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid. This near coincidence must be
\nquestioned and reflected upon. It is no secret that human rights
\nissues -- which are now being intensively spotlighted both at
\nhome and abroad, particularly regarding the alleged involvement
\nof a number of Army generals of the Indonesian Military (TNI) in
\nhuman rights violations allegedly committed after the popular
\nvote on the future of East Timor -- are not free from foreign or
\nUN intervention.<\/p>\n
It is no exaggeration to say, it seems, that the visit to
\nIndonesia of the UN secretary-general was intended to celebrate
\nhis victory and success in meddling in Indonesia's internal
\naffairs under the pretext of human rights, or perhaps simply to
\ncongratulate the government by awarding it a \"gift\" in the form
\nof assurances that it will not be necessary for the generals
\nallegedly involved in human right violations in East Timor to be
\ntaken before an international tribunal.<\/p>\n
Those who are favor of other nations meddling in their affairs
\nby other nations may find comfort in the statement of UN
\nsecretary-general and consider it a promise for the upholding of
\nhuman rights in Indonesia. However, those who really understand
\nthe difficulty of upholding human rights in Indonesia know full
\nwell that the statement is a blow to the government. The reason
\nis that foreign quarters, in this case the UN, know precisely
\nthat a human rights tribunal in Indonesia will never run well.<\/p>\n
Regardless of whether or not there is a political conspiracy
\nat home and abroad, it must be realized that there are many
\nobstacles to upholding human rights. Sincere awareness and
\nhonesty on the part of law enforcement apparatuses and the
\ncommunity are still far from adequate. Therefore, we can be sure
\nthat the UN will use this fact as a reason for taking over the
\norganization of an international tribunal on human rights for
\nthose who allegedly violated human rights in East Timor,
\nincluding the generals whose names have been recommended for
\ninvestigation by the National Commission on Human Rights.<\/p>\n
Therefore, those responsible for running the government must
\nalways be aware and alert and also act wisely in dealing with
\nthis matter. Don't sell the dignity of this nation under the
\npretext of defending the people's interests while the ulterior
\nmotive is fulfilling one's wild ambition.<\/p>\n
