Kodam to stay out of politics: Ryamizard<\/p>\n
BIDADARI ISLAND (JP): Since the capital's security has been
\ndelegated to the city police, the Jakarta Military Command will
\nfocus on developing into a professional unit, Jakarta Military
\nCommander Maj. Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He said he was trying to eradicate the city military's
\ninvolvement in politics as well as its interference in security
\naffairs.<\/p>\n
\"The command is no longer responsible for handling security in
\nthe city, as it was handed over to the city police last year.<\/p>\n
\"As a consequence, the Jakarta Military Command (Kodam) is now
\nconcentrating on enhancing the quality of its soldiers by
\nintensively conducting basic military training,\" he announced
\nafter addressing the opening of a two-day gathering of military
\nunits under the supervision of the Jakarta Military Command on
\nBidadari island of the Seribu Islands, off the Jakarta Bay.<\/p>\n
Prior to the gathering, the command held several sessions of
\nbasic military training in the Greater Jakarta area.<\/p>\n
The last gathering was held in Ciampea district, Bogor, last
\nApril, when all unit commanders were involved in a three-day
\nbasic combat training.<\/p>\n
\"All efforts to enhance the quality of our personnel are
\nintended to anticipate the worst situation should our country get
\ninvolved in wars with foreign enemies,\" Ryamizard said.<\/p>\n
Besides focusing on enhancing its personnel's combat
\ncapability, the command is also dedicated to improving its
\nintelligence unit, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Kodam is a support unit to the city police in handling
\nsecurity problems in the city.<\/p>\n
\"Speaking about intelligence affairs, we'll always coordinate
\nwith the city police on contemporary security matters in the
\ncapital,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The military chief said the Jakarta Military Command did not
\nfeel left out when the police took over handling the security of
\nthe city last year.<\/p>\n
He said the command and the city police headquarters had
\ndifferent responsibilities for maintaining security in the
\ncapital.<\/p>\n
\"The police maintain security and order in the city, while the
\nIndonesian Military (TNI), including the command, defends our
\ncountry from foreign invasions,\" he said. He said for example the
\npolice were responsible for handling brawls in the city.<\/p>\n
Ryamizard said TNI would only deploy its personnel if the
\npolice failed to maintain order and security in the country.<\/p>\n
\"TNI deployed personnel in Maluku after the circumstances
\nthere developed uncontrollably,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The National Police Headquarters were formally separated from
\nthe military in April last year.<\/p>\n
The National Police will come formally under direct
\nsupervision of the President beginning in January next year.
