Knock! Knock! 'Jumantik' is here<\/p>\n

From next week one of your neighbors may knock on your door and
\nshow you a glass jar containing mosquito larvae.<\/p>\n
When this happens, you know they have been recruited by the
\ncity administration as a jumantik (mosquito larvae monitoring
\nofficer).<\/p>\n
\"The jumantik is assigned to inform residents of the danger of
\ndengue fever and tell them about how to prevent the outbreak. The
\nmost important measure was to clean up still-water areas -- the
\nmosquitoes breeding ground,\" Minister of Health Achmad Suyudi
\nsaid at City Hall on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Suyudi and Governor Sutiyoso briefed representatives of 267
\nsubdistricts on the administration's dengue policy.<\/p>\n
About 800 jumantik will be on duty in communities around
\nJakarta to curb the rapidly spreading fever. The recruits will
\nsign a one-year contract and get a monthly salary of Rp 750,000
\n(US$89).<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said recruiting the officers was the next step.<\/p>\n
\"However, public support is strongly needed in combating the
\noutbreak, otherwise our personnel will fail to communicate the
\nimportant information to the residents,\" he said.<\/p>\n
It is impossible to vaccinate people against dengue.<\/p>\n
\"The only choice we have is to eradicate the carrier of the
\ndengue virus, the aedes aegypti mosquitoes, especially by
\nfocusing on killing the mosquito larvae,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Fumigating areas would not be enough to curb the outbreak
\nbecause it only killed adult mosquitoes.<\/p>",
