Knife-wielder nabbed near Ramos<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): Police in the southern Philippine city of Iligan
\nyesterday arrested a man carrying a knife who attempted to
\napproach President Fidel Ramos, the presidential palace said,
\ndenying he had tried to stab the Philippine leader.<\/p>\n
Press undersecretary Marcelo Lagmay said the suspect,
\nidentified as Eufemio Mahusay and armed with a six-inch kitchen
\nknife, was subdued by the police after a scuffle at a
\nslaughterhouse which Ramos was inaugurating.<\/p>\n
Lagmay said the man was not an employee of the slaughterhouse
\nbut merely someone "who was eager to see the president."
\n"There was no attempt at all to stab the president," Lagmay said,
\nadding that relatives of the suspect said he had a habit of
\ncarrying a knife around.<\/p>\n
Earlier radio and television reports said Mahusay was detained
\nafter forcing his way into the slaughterhouse and trying to stab
\nRamos. A policeman was wounded during the scuffle with the
\nsuspect.<\/p>",
