The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has stated that an investigation\ninto the cause of the fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA)\nin Tangerang, Banten, will commence once the firefighting efforts are\ncomplete. Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement at KLH, Inspector\nGeneral Rizal Irawan, said the current priority is extinguishing the\nfire and preventing the spread of smoke. \u201cAs I said yesterday, we are\nnow focusing on extinguishing the fire and preventing its spread. It is\nnot possible to process the crime scene to find the cause of the fire\nyet,\u201d Rizal said in Tangerang on Sunday.<\/p>\n
He noted that law enforcement efforts would be initiated after the\nfirefighting process at the TPA Jatiwaringin is complete. The fire has\nbeen burning for six days. \u201cWe will look at law enforcement efforts\nafter the process is finished. Then we will send a team back here,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Rizal mentioned that the TPA Jatiwaringin had received administrative\nsanctions from KLH in 2025 due to poor management. In addition to the\nsanctions, KLH instructed the regional government as the site manager to\nimplement a controlled landfill system. \u201cFrom last year to now, the\nefforts made by the district government have been to implement a\ncontrolled landfill. It turns out that in one year, they have only\nmanaged to complete five or six hectares. We can understand that, given\nthe total land area is 33 hectares, it is impossible to finish in one\nyear,\u201d Rizal said.<\/p>\n
He noted that the fire hotspots were located outside the zone that\nhad been converted to a controlled landfill. \u201cThe area that caught fire\nis outside the controlled landfill,\u201d Rizal explained. For now, KLH is\nscheduling a major evaluation of 390 landfills across Indonesia, set to\nbegin in early August 2026. \u201cThe evaluation will be on 1 August. So all\nof them, around 390 landfills, will be evaluated to see which ones are\ncompliant and which are not,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Faisal Malik Hendropriyono\npreviously stated that firefighting operations at the TPA Jatiwaringin\ncontinue through a joint operation involving personnel from various\nagencies. Thermal drones equipped with infrared cameras have been\ndeployed to detect heat radiation and analyse the source of the fire.\n\u201cSo we can only conduct monitoring and analysis through drones\nperiodically,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
KLH has also deployed two mobile monitoring systems to monitor air\nquality at the site, measuring pollutants such as sulphur dioxide (SO2),\nnitrogen dioxide (NO2), and particulate matter PM 1.0 and PM 2.5. \u201cThe\ngood air quality standard is 15.5, moderate is from 15.5 to 55.5, and\nbeyond that it is unhealthy and hazardous. It has reached a level of\n1,000. So for several days it was at 1,000, but last night I saw it drop\ndrastically,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
The characteristics of the fire are similar to peatland fires. The\ngovernment, through the Ministry of Forestry, has deployed 30 personnel\nfrom the Manggala Agni team from Sulawesi and West Java. Diaz stated\nthat these personnel have considerable experience and are equipped with\nspecial high-pressure equipment to extinguish hotspots beneath the\nsurface of the waste piles. \u201cBecause for this landfill, it is not that\nwatering from above is ineffective, but it is less effective. The fire\ncontinues underneath, so we need help from Manggala Agni to inject water\ndown to the hotspots below,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) together with the\nMeteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) are preparing a\nweather modification operation (TMC) scheme to help accelerate the\nextinguishing process. This aims to bring the emergency situation, which\nhas affected approximately 15 hectares, under control. \u201cSo it is\npossible that a TMC operation will be conducted tomorrow.
