Klender market traders upset over kiosk prices<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): About 35 traders selling their goods at a
\nmakeshift traditional market on Jl. Wijaya Kesumah I in Klender,
\nEast Jakarta, asked the city council yesterday to help them
\nnegotiate kiosk prices with PD Pasar Jaya, a city owned market
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
Bahar, the leader of the group, asked the city council's
\ncommission B, in charge of economic affairs, to urge the company
\nnot to overcharge them for their kiosks in the new market
\nbuilding set to open in 1996.<\/p>\n
"We duly hope the commission can help us by persuading or
\npressuring the company not to charge us an expensive price for a
\nkiosk because we cannot afford to pay it," Bahar said, without
\nstating the kiosk prices set by PD Pasar Jaya.<\/p>\n
He explained that all his friends lost everything after a fire
\ndisintegrated their kiosks twice. The last time was on Sunday,
\nwhen about 1,200 kiosks were reduced to ashes.<\/p>\n
The traders, who mostly sell foodstuffs, have been occupying
\nthe temporary market site since last year because the new market
\nbuilding owned by the company is still not finished.<\/p>\n
"Although we can buy on an installment basis, we still cannot
\nafford them and we are afraid that those kiosks will be bought by
\ntraders from other places," Bahar said, adding that the company
\nhas never asked the traders to discuss or negotiate prices.<\/p>\n
Bahar also asked the city council to prevent the company from
\nselling the kiosks to outsiders.<\/p>\n
Abdulgani H. Abdullah, chairman of the commission, said that
\nthe commission will summon the management of PD Pasar Jaya as
\nwell as the developer of the new market building.<\/p>\n
Temporary market<\/p>\n
Traders also inquired if PD Pasar Jaya will provide another
\ntemporary market. Police have sealed off the location since the
\nfire last destroyed the market area.<\/p>\n
"None of us can work and PD Pasar Jaya has not told us
\nanything about its plan," Sihombing said.<\/p>\n
Hasan Dasy, a member of the commission, said he had already
\ncontacted the company, who have promised to build a new temporary
\nmarket.<\/p>\n
Bahar and the other traders also asked the councilors to help
\nthem financially by contacting agencies in the city
\nadministration or the central government to provide soft loans
\nfor the traders.<\/p>\n
"As you know we have lost everything due to the fire and we
\nneed financial support to restart our businesses," Bahar
